Wairimu Kanja-Ristic Kenyan vibrations
Her nickname, Wai, suits her very well. ?In the job I do, the most important question is why?, she says with a friendly smile. Wai runs courses in various schools where the sensitive subject of sex education is studied in depth. One senses straight away that this communicative and direct person has little difficulty in awakening the interest of students. Her clear and animated way of speaking immediately captures the attention ? it?s no surprise to learn she worked in public relations in Kenya!
Soon after her arrival, Wai started contemplating the idea of being ?helpful? in some way to her new country. ?Mauritius is very developed compared to most countries of Africa, but I thought about what was lacking here.? That?s when she decided to work with young people. After training in the USA, she came back to teach a course oriented towards ?helping teenagers to explore the many questions about their sexuality in a healthy manner.?
This course has a psychological approach that takes into account all sides of a relationship. ?Indeed, I want teenagers to develop positive character qualities and relationships, learn communication and assertion skills.? All these aspects are important since young people sometimes go through so much pressure from peer groups or family. ?The course also explores the benefits of sexual abstinence and, among other topics, informs about STDs ?.
Her first course was in Le Bocage International High School and she ?has never looked back since then?. After starting courses in another school, she now needs to train other people to teach the same course because the demand is too high for her to satisfy alone. She is a very motivated person and hopes that her association will in the near future work with other similar associations in Mauritius.
Although Wai misses her family in Kenya and traditional Kenyan food, she looks on the bright side of things: ?I?ve tasted so many different types of food here that I can?t complain!? She is full of positive vibrations that are catching! She spends her free time reading books which ?inspire the empowerment of the mind? and ?enjoys working out at the gym.?
Wai loves Mauritius. ?I judge the beauty of a place by its people, and I find that Mauritians are generally very helpful and friendly.? Although she has not been here for a very long time, she is a perceptive person and admits to having realised a few things she didn?t notice when she first got here. ?For instance, I realised when I talked to people in my job, that certain issues aren?t discussed openly here, when they should be.? Sex education is no doubt only one of them...
