Indonesia to hold terrorists in new island jail
Indonesia is to build a new maximum security jail to hold terrorists and other important prisoners, a senior correctional official said yesterday.
Asked to comment on media reports that authorities were planning a special jail for terrorists, correctional institution registration director A. Takasiliang declared that Indonesia would build a ?super maximum institution? but ?not only for terrorists?. He said the justice minister had signed an agreement on Saturday to build the jail.
The new prison is to be on Nusakambangan island, off Central Java province 250 km southeast of Jakarta. The island, already known as Indonesia's Alcatraz after the notorious San Francisco Bay prison, houses some of the country's best-known criminals, such as former president Suharto?s youngest son Tommy, jailed for the shooting of a judge.
Indonesia has been hit by a number of bombing attacks in recent years blamed on Islamic militants, including the Bali blasts last October which killed 202 people and the attack on the JW Marriott hotel in Jakarta in early August which killed 12.
