Missing girl and ex-Marine contact relatives
A 12-year-old British girl who ran off with a former US Marine she met on the Internet has contacted her parents and told them she is safe, police said. ?She rang her mum at home to say that she was safe, but did not say where she was,? said a spokeswoman for Manchester police in northern England. She gave no further details. British police launched an international hunt for Shevaun Pennington after she ran away from home and flew to France with Toby Studabaker, 31, on Saturday.
Studabaker himself has also been in contact with his family and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) saying the girl ? who he claims lied about her age ? is ?fine,? his relatives said. ?He said Shevaun is fine, she is not hurt,? sister-in-law Sherry Studabaker told Britain?s ITN news.
?She is unharmed. He has not touched her or done anything with her. He is very upset because she has lied about her age to him.?
Studabaker?s family said he had not told them where he was or whether the girl was still with him. He told them he had believed her to be 19 years old. Sherry Studabaker told ITN she had given him the phone number of the FBI, and he had promised to call the authorities. ?I had talked to the FBI, and when I was speaking to the lady on the phone she told me she had another Studabaker on the phone, so that made me feel very proud and very happy that he did what I asked him to do,? she said.
French police said that Pennington had arrived in Paris with Studabaker, but that they believed she flew straight back to Britain on Saturday ? without leaving Paris? Charles de Gaulle airport, and without Studabaker. But British police said they believed the girl had stayed in France. An S. Pennington flew from Paris to Liverpool on Saturday night, but they concluded it was not Shevaun.
The schoolgirl?s disappearance has rekindled concern in Britain over so-called ?grooming? by paedophile adults who prey on children via the Internet.
