Le ministre de la Sécurité sociale, Samioullah Lauthan, a rendu un vibrant hommage aux athlètes mauriciens qui ont participé aux Olympiades d'été, à Dublin, du 21 au 29 juin dernier. S?adressant à la Chambre, le ministre devait remercier le speaker ?for allowing me to address the House on Special Olympics ? an international movement founded by Lady Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968. It provides sports training and activities for persons with mental retardation who are the most disadvantaged group among the disabled community. The aim is to empower them through participating in rehabilitative sports. The Mauritian branch of Special Olympics was set up in 1994 by late Georges Tang. Today it is catering for some 500 mentally retarded persons. Since its inception, it has organized a series of sports activities, workshops and competitions to enhance the physical, cognitive, emotional and social skills of mentally retarded persons?. Le ministre devait rappeler que l?aide du ministère en faveur des personnes avec un handicap mental fait suite au travail et au dévouement inlassable de feu George Tang, fondateur de la branche mauricienne de Special Olympics. ?In tribute to the late Georges Tang, my Ministry, in collaboration with Special Olympics, organizes the George Tang Memorial Athletic day annually.? C'est pour cette raison que le ministère devait parrainer la participation de 14 athlètes à ce grand rendez-vous sportif, qui se tient chaque quatre ans. ?The Special Olympics organizes the World Summer Games which are held every 4 years. This year more than 7,000 athletes from some 160 countries are participating in this big event, being held in Dublin from 21 to 29 June and the opening ceremony of which was performed by the former legendary ex-President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Nelson Mandela.? Dirigée par le PAS Swaminathan Ragen, la délégation mauricienne a été reçue avec les honneurs en Irlande, ayant même fait la une de la presse locale. Le ministre Lauthan s?est réjoui des médailles enlevées par nos athlètes, dont une en or, au 50 mètres hommes. Rappelons que le ministère de la Sécurité sociale avait parrainé le déplacement de cette délégation de quatorze personnes, en octroyant trois billets d?avion, une somme de Rs 20 000 comme argent de poche et des sacs de voyage aux athlètes. Le ministre Lauthan s?est dit ?pleased to inform the House that our country has been the subject of much praise by the Irish media since the arrival of the delegation in Dublin and most important ? one of our mentally retarded athletes namely Vinay Dinnoo who was competing in a 50m race against his counterparts from USA, Turkey and Northern Ireland won the Gold Medal. Another Mauritian athlete namely Vineshen Saroo won the Silver Medal. These are indeed major achievements. It?s a matter of pride for the disabled community and the nation.? En conclusion, il a réitéré la volonté du gouvernement de tout faire pour encourager de telles initiatives et pour aider encore plus à renforcer l?indépendance des personnes à handicap et ainsi faciliter leur pleine intégration dans la société.
