Jewellery sector brings in the sparkle!
Despite its complex industry structure vis-a-vis its textile and agricultural counterparts, the gem and jewellery industry in Mauritius has shown a remarkable 90% growth since its recession-related dip in 2008-09. The total export figure currently stands at Rs 4.2 billion post a 40% jump in the first quarter this year. There are just about 523 registered jewellers (that include 18 export-oriented units) and an overall strength of 2500 workers in this sector.
Experts and stakeholders take us through some of the nuances of this sector, including the significant diamond cutting & polishing segment, which has created sizeable employment of its own.
