A mysterious liquid spilled on a Tokyo subway train burnt one woman and made two other people ill, police said yesterday. Firefighters in protective gear were called out to deal with the incident late on Sunday, reviving memories of the 1995 sarin gas attack on the subway by the Aum Shinri Kyo (Supreme Truth Sect), which killed 12, injured thousands and shattered Japan?s reputation for safety.

?All we know is that the liquid was a strong alkali?, a police official said. ?It will take about a week to identify it.? A female university student suffered chemical burns after she sat on the seat where the liquid had been spilled. Two other people complained of feeling ill and were taken to hospital.
