Widow of late Pandit Sahadeo
Mrs Sahadeo passed away at her home in Vacoas on Thursday morning, 25th March 2003, at the age of 83. Mrs Sahadeo was born in 1921 and was known as Mlle Haulkory before her marriage to Pandit Sahadeo or Dazzi Rama. During the 1930s and early 1940s, she resided at rue Gladstone in Rose-Hill and was the neighbor of Emmanuel Anquetil. It was during Dazzi Rama?s frequent visits to Anquetil?s house between 1938 and 1941 that he became acquainted with the young Mademoiselle Haulkory whom he married in 1942 and was 22 years her senior.
Between 1942 and 1948, Mrs Sahadeo was always at her husband?s side when he was actively involved in the activities of the Labour Party, the trade union movement and the Jan Andolan. In 1950, she accompanied Pandit Sahadeo during a six-month trip to India where they met Dr Rajendra Parsad, the President of India.
During the early 1950s, Dazzi Rama, with the help of Dr Maurice Curé and his wife, founded the Gandhi Ashram as well as the Spinning and Weaving Centre from where he launched the Gandhi-inspired Khadhi movement in Mauritius. In 1960, Mrs Sahadeo accompanied her husband to India once again for several weeks in order to obtain medical treatment for the good pandit.
During the 1960s and 1970s, the Sahadeo couple spent most of their time at the Gandhi Ashram and also actively engaged in the activities of different Hindu socio-cultural organizations. In June 1972, during the state of emergency, when most of the leaders of the MMM were in prison, Mrs Sahadeo took care and provided the moral support to her husband when he began a 21-day hunger strike. It was brought to an end only thanks largely to Dr Curé?s intervention who was concerned about his old friend?s help.
In October 1978, after more than 36 years of marriage, Mrs Sahadeo was parted from her beloved husband. For more than three and a half decades, she had always provided the moral support to Pandit Sahadeo when he was engaged in his social activities. Exactly twenty-five years later, in October 2003, she was the guest of honor in Vacoas when Prime Minister Paul Bérenger, the Marathi Cultural Centre, and Arya Samaj paid the highest tribute to Pandit Sahadeo?s work and struggles on behalf of the Mauritian masses.
