«My parents don?t accept my boyfriend because he comes from a village»
My name is R and I am a 19 year old woman. The first time I met L, we fell immediately in love with each other. For eight months, we had the most wonderful relationship, he was sweet and caring, always there when I needed him.
Unfortunately my parents got to know that I was dating L and that he comes from a village. We were so much in love that we wanted to carry on regardless. It was mostly my mother who objected. My father did not care either way and we were hoping that one day we would look for his help to persuade my mother. Unfortunately, my mother found out that I was still dating L despite her objections.
My father then decided to sort things out and agreed to meet L in my presence. When my father asked him where he has decided to live after we marry, L said that he was going to live in his village at his parents? place. My father tried to dissuade him from that idea. When he asked me what I thought, I said that I agreed with my father and we should live in town and also because of the possibility of relational problems between his parents and me.
He became very angry and told me that he did not love me any more. His parents heard what had happened and told him that my family was not worth the bother. He even told me to check where my next boyfriend lives before going out with him. What should I do? Wait for him or move on. I love him with all my heart, please help me.

When we are in love, we cannot see anything wrong on the horizon. Even, when we know that all is not quite right, the imperfections do not seem to matter, we are completely wrapped up with the other person in an intoxicating exclusive and exciting oneness. This relationship would be suffocating if it continues as such. In reality, all relationships go through problems and some of them become stronger as a result.
Conversely, problems can sometimes threaten to overwhelm a relationship if the persons concerned cannot sort out their feelings, untangle their problems and are unable to cope with their difficulties in a constructive way.
Building a strong relationship needs the ability to communicate, to negotiate and manage conflicts as and when they occur. It also needs the ability of each partner to put the other first, a desire and willingness to see things from the point of view of their partner even when there is a disagreement.
These are elements that cement a relationship. It can meet almost any challenge and uses the experience positively. In actual fact, a crisis can highlight the value of that relationship. How much it means to you? It can prove how good you are at coping with it. I have gone through the preamble for your benefit as well as all the others who are in a relationship.
By that, I mean, whether those concerned are just sweethearts, lovers, married or just living together. When you fell in love with L, it was romantic, it was wonderful. It was not a myth, it was an experience that is passionate, exciting. What you need to realize and accept that sooner or later, problems will occur whether you want it or not. When that happens, it will be crunch time.
Therefore you need to pull all your resources to cope with it. For L and you, when the problems occurred, neither of you was prepared to concede. Some examples come vividly to mind. The first one, to live in a village or in a town as if that was the be and end all, to live with his parents or not. Just declaring your undying love, proving it, is even more important.
Your parents, by their snobbish attitude did not help. It seems to them that somehow if someone lives in a village, he must be in some way inferior. In reality, some villages have developed beyond recognition. Some of them can be seen as mini towns now. If you look down at people, how do you expect them to react?
Of course, L is not beyond reproach either, he was stuck on the idea of living in his village with his parents. He was not prepared to consider any other alternative. Remember, the essence of true communication is to make your points clearly, listen attentively, accept the other person point of view and be prepared to give ground as and when necessary for the well being of the couple.
I feel that as far as L is concerned, you should draw a line on that relationship but I really hope that you have learned a lot from this experience and will be better prepared in your next relationship. Lots of time, relationships break up because of the selfishness of one of the partner. They see things only from their point of view, nothing else matters. So think on.
