>Abortion questions the very definition of life. Do you really believe that freedom can take precedence over human life? If a woman accepts to have sexual relations, she should be able to take her responsibilities if she is pregnant.

Abortion questions the quality of life. Abortion cannot be attributed to a simple biological factor, but to biology mediated by a whole array of social, cultural and economic considerations. The question of whether freedom takes precedence over human life does not arise because the connection is faulty. The human life argument attempts to ?emotionalise? the debate. We should be pragmatic and realistic. We should try to think of how to avoid 70,000 deaths that are caused annually in the world due to unsafe abortion. We should accept that abortions have existed and will always exist. Unwanted pregnancies will always exist.

A woman with an unwanted pregnancy, who wishes to terminate the pregnancy for any reason, should be allowed to exercise her right freely and without coercion. This freedom should be guaranteed to her. A pregnant woman should indeed take her responsibility. This also entails that, as a responsible woman, she can decide to terminate her pregnancy.

>Don?t you think that legalising abortion could incite more people to do it? Youngsters may be less careful since they would still have a last resort?

Legalising abortion does not mean encouraging people to abort. In countries where abortion is legal, many do not resort to abortion even if the pregnancy is unplanned! In Romania, abortion was legalized in 1957, banned in 1966 and relegalised in 1989. Figures show that the number of abortions and associated deaths was greater during the period when it was banned, i.e between 1966 and 1989. The availability or not of abortion does not make someone less or more responsible or careful. We should all become more responsible and careful to avoid the last resort.

>Is the legalisation of abortion really the right solution? Don?t you believe that campaigns to avoid unwanted pregnancies are more appropriate since there would be no death in volved?

Abortion should not be promoted. But it is a solution which should be considered. To legalise abortion is to provide an alternative to a woman for whom an unwanted pregnancy is a burden. We should all try to avoid unwanted pregnancies, just as drivers should avoid accidents. But accidents do happen! And they cause damage! We don?t live with the damage and keep on lamenting Instead we repair the damage and the journey continues. Legalising abortion provides somebody with the opportunity of repairing the damage professionally.
