Special Event
China Town’s rebirth!
The last weekend of May will see the ‘Chinatown Food and Cultural festival 2005’. This initiative is the first step towards the revival of China Town. Festivities will start on the 28th at 6pm and end on the 29th. The whole project was an idea of the Prime Minister, Paul Berenger, in association with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce (CCC). The Chinese Chamber of Commerce has organised performances by Chinese dragons, taï-chi-chaun, kung-fu and taekwondo demonstrations, which will be done by several Chinese cultural associations. A calligraphy master will be present at the Heritage Court and an astrologer will be available for consultations during the evening. The traditional shops will be open until late and will offer promotional prices. Restaurants will propose traditional dishes at special prices. This festival has been organised with the hope of recovering their lost inheritance and to bring together the Chinese communities from around the island, but also to recreate the atmosphere of a real China Town. This occasion is also a way of helping promote security in the area; streets will be cleaned, well lit and well decorated. This is also an opportunity to give the people of China Town a break from their daily routine. And if this festival is a success, why not have another one! says Clement Lan, executive member of the CCC.
