Singapore will deploy marshals on trains
Singapore, which sees itself as a possible target of a terrorist attack due to its strong support for the US in its war against Iraq, will put marshals on its trains following the Madrid bombings, the government said on Monday.
The city state has already put armed guards on selected flights by its flag carrier Singapore Airlines. Transport Minister Yeo Cheow Tong told reporters on the sidelines of an oil industry conference that train operators have been briefed on the measures needed to ensure security of trains but gave no details of the plan to put marshals on trains.
?It?s something that is new. It?s still in the early stage of discussion,? Yeo said, referring to the train marshals.
Around one million people ride the island?s trains every day.
Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan, who is also co-ordinating minister for security and defence, said on Sunday that stronger security measures have to be enforced to protect trains and stations. Asked whether the government has received information of a possible attack, hence, the deployment of train marshals, Tan said: ?We have not received any such information.?
?We are of the view that Singapore is safe, that all the necessary precautions have been taken. But we have seen what has happened in Madrid. It must not happen in Singapore,? Tan said.
Aside from air marshals, Singapore has tightened security around its waters in the wake of the September 11 attacks, revising ferry routes and increasing patrols near chemical refineries located on offshore islands and around its naval facilities.
