Blair : no deal in prisoner release </B>

British diplomats did not make any concessions to secure the release of the 15 UK sailors detained last month by Iran, Tony Blair has said. Speaking outside Downing Street, the prime minister told reporters that the return of the personnel did not involve any «deal» or «negotiation».He expressed his belief that a combination of maintaining a «calm and firm» stance, which maintained bilateral communication while mobilising international opinion in Europe and at the UN, ensured the safe return of the sailors to Britain. Blair launched a wider attack on the Iranian government, maintaining Britain?s unmoving stance against Tehran. He referred to the deaths of four British soldiers in the southern Iraqi city of Basra earlier today in the same breath as criticising Iran for supporting terrorism in Iraq.

Mr Blair said their deaths demonstrated the «sober and ugly reality of what is happening through terrorism in Iraq».

Death toll of Solomon Islands tsunami rises to 37</B>

The official death toll from the tsunami that hit the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific early this week has risen to 37, with 100 still missing, radio reports from New Zealand and Australia said Friday. Two earthquakes measuring between 7.6 and 9 on the Richter scale triggered a tsunami Monday some 30 feet high that completely flooded the towns of Gizo and Noro in the Western Province of the country. Alex Lokopio, the Prime Minister of the Western Province, said the number of victims was likely to increase, considering the number of people missing and the large area that remained to be searched. Original government estimates said the flood affected 25 % of the Western Province, which consists of a few hundred islands with a population of 90,000.

Officials of the country said tents had been provided to accommodate all those left without homes, but that water supplies remained a major problem because wells had been contaminated with seawater. With a population of about 550,000, the island group is a popular venue with tourists, and local residents rely mainly on fishing and tourism for income. The most powerful and disastrous calamity involving a tsunami over the last 40 years occurred in December 2004, when an earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale in the Indian Ocean generated a tsunami wave that hit South Asian countries, particularly Indonesia, killing more than 280,000 people. Tens of thousands were reported missing.

Un dentiste peu porté sur l?hygiène</B>

Un chirurgien-dentiste britannique a été reconnu coupable avant-hier d?avoir uriné dans le crachoir de son cabinet et de s?être servi d?ustensiles professionnels destinés aux patients pour se curer les ongles et se nettoyer les oreilles. Au vu des éléments recueillis, un tribunal spécialisé a estimé qu?Alan Hutchinson, 51 ans, mettait en danger depuis plus de 28 ans sa propre santé, celle de ses assistants et de ses patients. Il était connu pour s?abstenir régulièrement de porter des gants et de se laver les mains. Une assistante ayant travaillé plus de seize ans avec Hutchinson a dit l?avoir surpris plusieurs fois en train d?uriner dans le crachoir. «Il a rentré quelque chose dans son pantalon avant de refermer précipitamment la fermeture Eclair. Je me suis approchée, je me trouvais derrière lui. Il s?est tourné vers la gauche et j?ai senti une odeur d?urine», a-t-elle déclaré. Le tribunal a décidé que le manque d?hygiène du praticien le rendait inapte à exercer et l?a radié du registre des dentistes, ce qui lui interdit toute activité dans ce domaine. «Vous avez uriné dans un crachoir à l?intérieur de votre cabinet de chirurgie dentaire, puis, sans vous être lavé les mains, vous avez entrepris de traiter un patient. Ce comportement est de toute évidence malvenu et totalement inacceptable», a déclaré le président du tribunal.

Référendum : le ?Oui? creuse l?écart </B>

Le «Oui» prend petit à petit le large aux résultats du référendum constitutionnel avec un pourcentage de 71 % sur l?ensemble du pays. Tout semble se stabiliser après le choc causé par le record d?abstention. La publication des résultats a été bloquée hier avant de reprendre en fin d?après-midi. Le «oui» est en train de renverser la tendance de la veille, plutôt mal engagée. Selon les résultats provenant de 31 % des bureaux de vote, le «oui» mène avec 71 % des suffrages exprimés. Les partisans du «oui» sont en train de gagner sur les deux fronts. Le taux de participation des électeurs s?améliore également, confortant ainsi la légitimité de la réforme constitutionnelle proposée par le président Marc Ravalomanana.

Selon les chiffres publiés par le ministère de l?Intérieur hier, le «oui» recueille 71,54 % des suffrages exprimés.
