Petrol stations are angry and want the authorities to know it. The rise in the price of petrol and gas does not mean that their profits have increased. They have threatened to stop selling those two products because they do not bring in as much money as they would like. According to the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA), their profits are getting smaller each time there is an increase based on the automatic pricing mechanism. They therefore wish to see a change in the way their profit margin is calculated.

At the moment, they say their profit margin on one litre of petrol is 49 cents. As they acknowledge that it will be hard to stop the supply of petrol, they say they are thinking about supplying fixed quantities of petrol every month - which may cause a lot of problems to customers. As for gas, the PRA explains that many stations have already stopped selling this product while others have reduced their stock. Their profit on each each canister of gas is said to be Rs 7.40. The service stations are also asking the government to review their opening hours to 7 am to 7 pm to reduce their operation costs.
