Racing Stewards’ Report
■ <B>RACE 1 – THE NATIONAL HORSERACING AUTHORITY TROPHY</B>
At the start Bobby’s Boy threw its head up and Sir Winston was slow into stride. Passing the 200 metres Pigeon Post was taken out for a run off the heels of Smuggler, Blue Grass Beau, which was racing on its outside, was slightly inconvenienced and had to be taken out. Passing the 150 metres Desert Prince was taken out for a clear run and near the 100 metres brushed Pigeon Post, resulting in the latter being cramped for room and having to be checked from Sir Winston which had shifted in. Jockey Brown (Desert Prince) was shown the video of the incident and advised to show care in future. Near the 75 metres Sir Winston, which had continued to shift in, bumped Desert Prince on its inside causing the latter to shift in, resulting in Smuggler, which was following, having to be eased. At an inquiry into the incident, jockey Shea (Sir Winston) was found guilty of a charge under Rule 161 (c) in that approaching the 50 metres he carelessly allowed his mount to shift in. After considering that jockey Shea had been warned for the same offence on two occasions the previous meeting, he was fined Rs 10 000.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Bobby’s Boy and Sir Winston prior to the race and from Cedar Falls prior to and after the race.
■ <B>RACE 2 – THE CONNOLLY & TURNER BLOODSTOCK FORWARING TROPHY</B>
At the start, Century Lad jumped outwards, brushing Major League and Sardonyx stood flat-footed, losing about one length. Approaching the 1100 metres Dane’s Castle had to be eased off the heels of Century Lad and shifted in and In A Heart Beat and Palatino, which were following, were slightly inconvenienced. Approaching the 1200 metres Twoicee was slightly inconvenienced and had to be steadied when In A Heart Beat shifted in. Jockey Boutanive was shown the video of the incident and advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. From the 1100 metres Century Lad started racing fiercely and was eventually taken out off the heels of Gold Guild and in the back straight was allowed to go to the lead. Near the 75 metres Gold Guild shifted out abruptly from the whip and had to be straightened. The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Legionnaire bled from both nostrils. In view of this report and, acting under Rule 166 (2) (c), trainer Rameshwar Gujadhur was told that Legionnaire has been suspended for one month and will need a veterinary clearance before being allowed to race again.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Legionnaire prior to the race and from Sardonyx after the race.
■ <B>RACE 3 – THE RACING ASSOCIATION TROPHY</B>
At the start African Ambassador jumped with its head up, Mr Magoo half-reared and jumped inwards, Ten Hundred jumped outwards brushing Ashton Manor and Sun King jumped awkwardly, all being slow out and losing about one length. African Ambassador raced fiercely from the 1100 to the 700 metres. Jockey Neisuis (Ashton Manor) reported that his mount did not settle during the race and hung out badly on the turns. A subsequent veterinary examination of this horse revealed it to have lost its off fore shoe in running.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from African Ambassador prior to the race and from Sugar Prince after the race.
■ <B>RACE 4 – THE GOLD CIRCLE CHALLENGE TROPHY</B>
The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Forest Flag was lame on the off hind leg and was unfit to race. Consequently, the horse was withdrawn at 8 a.m. on Saturday. As a result, all bets on this horse were ordered to be refunded and
betting with bookmakers was re-opened. Trainer S. Henry was told that Forest Flag will need a veterinary certificate of soundness before being allowed to race again. At the start Brandy-Pawnee was slow out, losing about one length. Gold Bid raced fiercely from shortly after the start until the 1200 metres. Near the 150 metres Gold Bid shifted out from the whip and brushed Lump Sum, resulting in the latter becoming unbalanced and hanging in over a short distance.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Gold Bid prior to the race and from Grey Arrow after the race.
■ <B>RACE 5 – THE South African Airways Cargo DUKE OF YORK CUP</B>
At the start Tabascorez, Chief Warrior and Clifton King were slow out, all losing about one length. At an inquiry into an incident, jockey Whitmore (Germany On) pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 161 (c) in that passing the 1500 metres he carelessly allowed his mount to shift in, resulting in Chief Warrior having to be eased over a few strides. Jockey Whitmore was fined Rs 10 000. Passing the 1400 metres, Chief Warrior was inconvenienced and had to be eased when Germany On shifted in. From the 1100 metres, when the pace slowed, Clifton King started to race fiercely and approaching the 900 metres was taken out off the heels of Chief Warrior, brushing World Focus on its outside.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Cherry Bite, Clifton King and Tabascorez prior to the race and from Chief Warrior prior to and after the race.
■ <B>RACE 6 – THE BLOODSTOCK SOUTH AFRICA TROPHY</B>
An objection was lodged by jockey Neisius, rider of Yankee Bell, which finished third, against Noble Dancer, which finished second, alleging interference near the 100 metres. After taking evidence from the riders and trainers concerned and viewing the relevant videos, the objection was dismissed. At the start Grand Duke threw its head up, and Vampire Jet was slow out, both losing about one length. Dandy Rouge raced wide throughout. At an inquiry into an incident, jockey Shea pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 161 (c) in that passing the 1300 metres he carelessly allowed his mount to shift in, causing Arabian Scent to be taken in onto Joshua Day, resulting in the latter becoming cramped for room and having to be checked. Jockey Shea was fined Rs 20 000. Passing the 450 metres Yankee Bell stumbled. Near the 100 metres, apprentice Bussunt (Lex) accidentally dropped his whip.

■ RACE 7 – THE PHUMELELA GAMING & LEISURE TROPHY</B>
At the start, Game Lodge, Sunsat, St Austell and Wise Owl were slow out, all losing about one length. From the 400 metre-marker on the first occasion, Game Lodge, which was racing fiercely, raced awkwardly off the heels of Eli’s Romance and near the 300 metre-marker clipped the latter’s heels and stumbled. Entering the final straight Eli’s Romance and St Austell, which was following, both shifted in and near the 100 metres, St Austell had to be taken out for a clear run off the heels of Eli’s Romance.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Game Lodge and Golden Millenium prior to the race and from Eli’s Romance after the race.
■ <B>RACE 8 – THE SEA WARRIOR PLATE</B>
At the start, Be A Sport jumped awkwardly, threw its head up, unbalancing jockey Neisius. Gandolf jumped outwards, bumping Catullus which was taken out onto Be A Sport and Link-Up jumped inwards onto Love Bug resulting in Be A Sport becoming cramped for room and having to be checked. Frequent Dance was disappointed for a clear run for most of the final straight. In the final straight, Bite The Bullet hung out under pressure resulting in Ice Flow, which was following, having to be taken out. Near the 100 metres Ice Flow was taken out off the heels of Catullus, which was hanging in under pressure. Over the final 50 metres, Bite The Bullet shied away from Jockey Shea’s whip and shifted in, resulting in Gandolf, which was following, being taken in onto the heels of Link-Up and having to be eased approaching the winning post.
