<B> RACE 1 ? LE PRIX SOCIETE CLUB FOTO LTEE</B>
The Club?s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Guzerat was lame in the off fore fetlock and was unfit to race. Consequently, the horse was withdrawn at 8.30 a.m. on Friday. As a result, all bets on this horse were ordered to be refunded and betting with bookmakers was re-opened. Trainer Rameshwar Gujadhur was advised that Guzerat will need a veterinary certificate of fitness before being allowed to race again. At the start Wolfe Tone was slow out, losing about one length. Arabian Prophesy jumped outwards, brushing Praise Caesour, resulting in the latter shifting out and inconveniencing Wolfe Tone. Wolfe Tone raced wide on the final turn and Jockey Jago reported that it raced greenly throughout the race. When questioned regarding the poor performance of Superviviente, trainer S. Ramdour stated that the horse was racing over a shorter distance and was one-wide throughout. Jockey Boutanive stated that he started urging his mount from the 450 metres but the horse never responded. A subsequent veterinary examination of Superviviente revealed that it had displaced its soft palate on several occasions.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Wolfe Tone and Arabian Prophesy prior to the race and from Imperious Caesour after the race.
■ <B>RACE 2 ? THE LABOURDONNAIS CUP</B>
At the start Tamarin Falls jumped outwards and Almahab jumped inwards and In A Heart Beat, which was racing in between, was slightly inconvenienced. Near the 1350 metres Dick Dastardly shifted in and Judge Boesman which was racing fiercely was slightly inconvenienced. Jockey Shea was shown the video of the incident and told to allow more room when shifting in. At an inquiry into the same incident, Jockey Jupp was found guilty of a charge under Rule 161 (f) in that passing the 1300 metres he, without good cause, failed to bridge the gap between the leading horse and his mount, thus not riding to the satisfaction of the Racing Stewards. He was fined Rs 20,000. Passing the 300 metres Sugar Prince was inconvenienced behind Sun King and was taken out. As a result, Almahab, on its outside, was taken out wider and made the turn into the final straight very wide. Upon entering the final straight Sun King had to be taken in in order to obtain a clear run. Shortly after entering the final straight Sugar Prince had to be taken in off the heels of Judge Boesman in order to obtain a clear run. In the final straight In A Heart Beat hung in and proved difficult to be properly assisted and near the 100 metres brushed Judge Boesman, resulting in the latter having to be taken in. Over the last 50 metres, Judge Boesman hung out away from the whip and was slightly inconvenienced off the heels of Dick Dastardly. The Club?s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Almahab was not striding when being trotted. In view of this, trainer A. Perdrau was told that this horse will need a veterinary certificate of soundness before being allowed to race again.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from In A Heart Beat prior to the race and from Dick Dastardly after the race.
■ <B>RACE 3 ? THE RENE MAINGARD CUP</B>
At the start Aeronaut jumped outwards onto Umhlanga and Destination jumped inwards, resulting in Umhlanga being inconvenienced.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Tambour Battant, Aeronaut and Destination prior to the race and from Ten Hundred after the race.
■ RACE 4 ? THE REYNOLDS COQUET CUP</B>
In the final straight Orace Barfoot hung out badly, proving difficult to be properly assisted. When questioned regarding the performance of Vampire Jet, trainer S. Ramdour stated that being an old horse, the latter may have not recuperated from its last run and informed the Stewards that he would probably give Vampire Jet a short spell. Jockey Boutanive stated that although racing closer to the pace this time he had to urge his mount throughout the race. He added that he expected a better run from the horse since it had worked well in the build up to today?s race and was very disappointed.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Vampire Jet prior to the race and from One For The Road after the race.
■ <B>RACE 5 ? THE GUY DESMARAIS CUP</B>
From the 1500 metres to approximately the 1300 metres, when the pace slowed, Hector raced very fiercely proving difficult to be settled. From the 300 metres Brandy-Pawnee had a tendency to hang in and proved very difficult to be properly assisted in the final straight. After passing the winning post, jockey Herholdt unnecessarily whipped his mount on two occasions. At an inquiry into this incident, he pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 161 (e) in that he used his whip in an improper manner and was fined Rs 5,000. The Club?s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Bullet suffered a cut to its near fore leg and was lame on it. In view of this, trainer S. Ramdour was told that this horse will need a veterinary certificate of fitness before being allowed to race again. When questioned as to the poor performance of Lump Sum, trainer H. Maigrot stated that he expected a good run from the horse as the latter had worked well during the week preceding the race but was disappointed with the run. Jockey Jupp added that from the 600 metres Lump Sum failed to respond to his urgings, so he decided not to persevere with it over the concluding stages. A subsequent veterinary examination of the horse revealed it to be trotting sound and an endoscopic examination revealed no abnormality. Near the 100 metres, Chief Warrior was taken out off the heels of Brandy-Pawnee in order to obtain a clear run.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Chief Warrior prior to the race and from Rodriques prior to and after the race.
■ RACE 6 ? LA COUPE DE L?AMBASSADE DE FRANCE</B>
At the start Longford was slow out losing about one length. From the 400 metres Thatch Match hung out despite jockey Rama?s effort to straighten it. At an inquiry into the riding of Nautilus, jockey Teeha was found guilty of a charge under Rule 161 (f) in that he failed to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards, the particulars being that, firstly, over the first
200 metres he urged his mount excessively, contrary to his instructions given by his trainer in front of the Racing Stewards and secondly, despite the initial effort he required from his horse, he prematurely put pressure on his mount as from the 500 metres. Jockey Teeha was suspended from riding in races for one race meeting. At an inquiry into the riding of Longford Jockey Boutanive was asked why, passing the 400 metres, he did not improve his position into a gap which had presented itself when Heliotrope shifted out. When shown the video of the incident, jockey Boutanive explained that as he was about to improve his position, Heliotrope shifted back in resulting in him having to ease his mount slightly. His explanation was accepted.

■ <B> RACE 7 ? PRIX DU CENTENAIRE DE L?ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE</B>
At the start Swiss Avalanche and To The Line were slow out, both losing about one length. Old Trafford jumped with its head up. From approximately 100 metres after the start, Swiss Avalanche started to race fiercely, throwing its head up when being settled and from the 800 metres raced awkwardly off the heels of Brooke?s Express. Approaching the 700 metres, Telaroyal, when attempting to come off the fence bumped Brooke?s Express on its outside on three occasions and was eventually taken back in by Brooke?s Express. Jockey Whitmore was shown the video of the incident and told to avoid jostling other horses. Approaching the 450 metres, Telaroyal had to be eased off the heels of Winter?s Flame and Moyenne, which was following Telaroyal, had to be checked. From the 300 metres, Old Trafford was taken out for a clear run and made the turn into the final straight very wide.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from To The Line and Old Trafford prior to the race and from Brooke?s Express after the race.
■ <B>RACE 8 ? THE WINGED PHAROAH PLATE
Desert Prince was slow into stride. Passing the 600 metres Regal Rusty was taken out for a clear run and Tsavo on its outside was taken out and raced wide from then onwards. Approaching the 100 metres Tsavo shifted in under pressure and Mudslide Slim shifted out, resulting in both horses brushing. Over the final 75 metres Rue Royale hung out badly under pressure. Over the last 75 metres Regal Rusty shifted out resulting in Mudslide Slim being slightly inconvenienced.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Regal Rusty prior to and after the race.
