<B>Tough winter soon…</B>
Winter has come with no warning. It seems that temperatures have suddenly dropped overnight. Pullovers have now been out of the cupboards for one week. The meteorological station in Vacoas has indeed declared that the cold season came around two weeks before the expected date. Even worse, it forecasts “severe cold” during the season, as extreme temperatures have been registered throughout the world recently. Temperatures could even drop to 12° on high ground. Many of us complained about the summer being too hot but could soon change our minds…
<B>Medine has its own IRS project</B>
The work for the Medine Wolmar Projects including the construction of 119 villas with a private pool for each, a golf course, a hotel with 30 lodges and a Spa are starting in July. This is part of an Integrated Resort Scheme, which should expand (to include greater tourist and leisure activities) in the future. As for the first part of the project, the opening should be held in March 2006 and the first villas delivered about four months later. The chief executive of Medine, Dany Giraud, is convinced that the project should boost foreign direct investment, as the owners of these villas will most probably want to invest in various sectors of the country.
<B>US extends quotas on Chinese textile</B>
Mauritius can breathe for a while. Washington has reintroduced quotas on four new categories of clothes. With those on trousers, cotton T-shirts and underwear, the US has finally reintroduced quotas on seven products, which represent 80% of Mauritian textile production. This is nearly an embargo on Chinese products, which will come into force next week.
<B>Fight over Tipo’s adoption</B>
Tipo, an orphan since the age of two months, was taken in by Marianne and has been living with her ever since. He considers her as his mother. In April, a couple decided to adopt Tipo, but the young boy doesn’t want to change families. Legally, Tipo has to be handed over to the couple but Marianne doesn’t want to be separated from Tipo and has also undertaken legal procedures against the couple who have done the adoption procedures behind her back. She wants to get Tipo’s adoption cancelled. She is now on the run with the little boy.
