Prospective students in UK be careful

A number of young Mauritians wishing to study in the UK have been taken in by a swindler. The latter holds out the prospect of UK studies to school leavers and delivers fake documents. As soon as the students arrive at the school they are told they can?t be accepted since their documents are illegal. As a result, many of them are out on the streets with no money and nowhere to go. They are ashamed of relating their stories to their relatives in Mauritius. The London police and the Home office are inquiring into the matter.

Worker dies at new electric power station

Already at the origin of a controversy, Dumas Streeet electric power station was the scene of tragedy last week. Goorooduth Fullee, 41, died after he fell from the roof where he was working on high voltage cables. His two colleagues, who also fell from the roof, were injured but are recovering. One of the pylons broke under the three men. At the beginning of the year, the station was in the news because if it had been ready in September 2004 as expected, the recent black-outs could have been avoided.

Professional misdemeanours sanctioned

The ministry of Health is working on the possibility of amending the law to make the Medical Council more efficient and sanction doctors who commit professional errors. For the moment, the procedures are lengthy and the medical council is not authorised to sanction doctors accused of medical negligence. The changes to the law aim at softening procedures to enable the Public Service Commission and the Medical Council to work together.
