One more for Savriacooty
Time goes by and Marie-Linley Savriacooty continues to attract attention. The police found her half-conscious on Pointe-aux-Sables beach last Friday morning with blood on her face and jeans. She at first refused to reveal her identity to the police or to say what had happened to her but then, as the police recognised her, she alleged that two men had taken her to a house in Pointe-aux-Sables while she was walking on the beach and abused her sexually all night. She was taken to Jeetoo Hospital where no serious injuries were seen except some bruises on her body but she left before being fully examined. She asserts that many people now think she is a liar and a psychopath and that her children are suffering from this situation ? ?Why would I invent all this??

The Compagnie Mauricienne de Textile (CMT) keeps showing that success is possible in the textile sector. And they are setting the example. After revealing that their turnover and profits have been increasing over the past year, they announced the opening of a new factory this week. The new production unit, which has cost Rs 300 million in investment, will employ 3,500 people. But the textile firm has other projects in mind for the next two years. Its objective is to become one of the ten biggest textile companies in the world by 2008. This means that the CMT will have to increase its production capacity by 50 or 60 % and will employ 12,000 people.
What about Agalega?
After an Indian newspaper mentioned the possibility that Mauritius might lease Agalega to the Indian authorities, the Mauritian government has kept on denying it. The prime minister, Navin Ramgoolam, even seized on the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Agricultural Marketing Board to reiterate this denial. But it still seems to be in people?s minds. And the opposition intends to raise the issue in Parliament today. Opposition MPs want to know more about the information published in the Indian press and will ask the PM to answer its questions.
Illegal medicines seized
The Anti Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) dismantled an illegal trade in medicines in a pharmacy in Vallée-des-Prêtres last Wednesday. They seized psychotropes and cough-syrups, which the pharmacy was selling illegally. The pharmacy owner, Sunita Bhuttoo, revealed that she was supplied by an inhabitant of Fond-du-Sac, Sookraj Coonjul. Both have been arrested. After a search in the pharmacy where the ADSU found nothing, they decided to go to the owner?s house. This is where they found the medicines as well as a bag containing almost Rs 2 million.
