Potential rise in gas prices
Mauritius has not followed the world trend concerning gas prices. In other words, the price of Light Petroleum Gas (LPG) has not increased as quickly as the world market price. However this may not go on for much longer. ?The government has done its best at the expense of the economy but we will have to resort to alternative modes of electricity production quite rapidly,? warned the minister of Public services, Abu Kasenally. So far the authorities have managed not to increase gas prices through cross-subsidies. But this may change soon and a rise in the price of gas is in the offing.
Increase in arrivals of Indian tourists
The visit of the minister of Tourism and Leisure, Xavier-Luc Duval, to India is bearing its first fruits. Air India could serve Mauritius twice or three times a week as from the end of March. Indian tourists? arrivals in Mauritius have constantly risen since 1999 and India has become the seventh market of the Mauritian destination. The service by Air India can only increase this number to help achieve the targeted two million tourists in a few years. The Indian clientele is said to be ?ideal during the low season? with an important number of middle-income visitors.
?High quality? fake notes
The Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) has dismantled a network of counterfeiters in Grand-Port Savanne where it has seized Rs 73,200 in fake Rs 200 notes. They have arrested Vijayanend Nundowah, suspected of masterminding the operation, and Youvrajsingh Bala, suspected of being his accomplice. The Adsu believes that Rs 100,000 in such fake notes are already in circulation. After one week of tailing the suspects, the Adsu discovered high-tech equipment at the main suspect?s home and material to manufacture fake notes at Bala?s house. Thelatter asserts that Nundowah provided all this.
Plaisance : an overpopulated airport
At a time when Mauritius needs an increase in its number of visitors, the ?remodelling? of the airport appears as a must. Airports of Mauritius Ltd (AML) is aware that the extension of the airport is a top priority; the project estimated at Rs 1.5 billion should have started three months ago. But AML is confident that they will make up for lost time during construction. Meanwhile, the airport is too small for the increasing numbers of passengers and tourist agencies and Air Mauritius will have to manage the dissatisfaction of their clients.
