It is unheard of.

First we learn in Parliament that the police have seemingly been entrusted with a ?mission impossible?; that of finding an absconder, arrested seven years ago, found guilty five years ago and whose appeal was quashed last year. The man apparently possessed some kind of magical power that rendered him invisible every time a policeman approached him. But due to his immense powers, he was able to materialise in front of his wife, family and some members of the press.

Our admirable police must have been dumbfounded when they saw fresh photographs of the illusory man in the press and heard his voice on the airs of private radio stations. But still they searched and searched and could not find him. In the meantime, Fakoo explained his sorry plight through the press, to his fellow citizens, some of whom have been on the receiving end of his violence. He was way too ill to be imprisoned, he said, and explained why he couldn?t do time in Beau-Bassin. But the police weren?t to be moved; they still relentlessly chased the invisible man. But to no avail.

Until -oh miracle!- Mr Invisible decided to take pity on the police and, in a selfless gesture that needs to be applauded, and remembered, decided to give himself in. And the police people sighed a sigh of relief. I don?t yet know if they have thanked Mr Fakoo for the immense favour done to the rest of the law abiding citizens of this country, but government, on the other hand, was determined to show their gratitude; Mr Fakoo was welcomed by the Attorney General at the latter?s office -it was probably too late to get the red carpet out and dust it. But instead Fakoo was graced with the presence of the press, who witnessed his selfless surrender and immortalised it all on their digital cameras. And a hero was born.

I mean, seriously ! The people who have orchestrated this sickly show at Rama Valayden?s office yesterday morning must really not think much of us to think they could insult our intelligence in such a morbid way.

The Attorney General needs to explain to us why a man ? wanted for violent crimes ? should be so welcomed in his office that one might be misled into thinking that the AG was actually meeting a VIP yesterday morning. He needs to explain whether such gentlemanly treatment is to be afforded to all law-breaking citizens and criminals as from now. He needs to clarify whether in the privacy of his office, he reassures all newly convicted that their constitutional rights will be respected in the confines of the penitentiary in Beau-Bassin.

If the answer is no, then he needs to explain why Manan Fakoo was treated like a friend when he is clearly a foe of all law abiding citizens. We would also like to know if all of this has anything to do with invisible man?s political allegiances. Seeing that the Attorney General and the police have failed to issue Fakoo with a well-needed advice that might also help others think twice before committing a crime while wanting to evade imprisonment, let us do it in their place; don?t do the crime if you?re not prepared to do the time.

Unless of course, you also possess the magical power of the invisible man.
