More plans to reduce traffic jams
Yet another scheme is being considered to solve traffic problems or at least reduce them. This project will help to keep the traffic moving. Studies have shown that the recent measures taken concerning the southern entrance to the centre of the capital have paid off.
At the moment, the Road Development Authority and the Traffic Management Unit are concentrating on the northern entrance. As from 15th June, cars coming from the north will use the road in front of Trou-Fanfaron police station and Pasteur Street to link onto Royal Road to avoid vehicles passing through Place d’Armes and in front of Government house.
The plan, which has been divided into two parts, will also consist in moving the taxi stand and getting rid of pedestrian pathways and traffic dividers, for example. Another measure due to start in July concerns heavy goods vehicles that will have to leave the harbour mainly after rush hours.
Other towns are also concerned. In Curepipe, especially d’Epinay Street where the traffic is horrendous, the current taxi stand will be moved as from mid-June. In Quatre Bornes, the parking slots along St Jean Road will be removed to make way for three-lane traffic.
