MCB trusts budget Measures
After several pessimistic reports on economic growth, the Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) seems to be recovering confidence in the future. The MCB Focus forecasts that the country will start feeling the positive consequences of the drastic measures contained in the budget in about two years. Meanwhile, the population will have to face a few difficulties? ?The in-depth reforms mentioned in the budget create the favourable conditions to completely review the economic model in a hostile context,? states the report. The economists thus believe there will be a 6% economic growth when the hard times have gone by.
However, until such a positive situation is reached, there should still be hard times ahead. The investment rate is still very low and is far from enough to promote growth - and jobs. The amount of savings is another reason for anxiety as well as high inflation and unemployment rates.
If the economists of the MCB have regained some trust in the country?s future, it is just because last month?s budget seems to meet present expectations. With its reforms to facilitate investment and better allocate resources, the government may succeed in boosting economic growth. However, they make it clear that no success will occur if the government does not implement the measures quickly. ?A rapid implementation of these decisions should improve the mood in business circles and increase the level of investment compared to the Growth Domestic Product in the middle-term,? the report concludes.
