Rhythmically n’évolue peut-être plus au niveau qui était le sien lorsqu’il écrasait tout sur son passage en 2003, mais force est de constater que même en déçà de sa forme optimale, il demeure encore très redoutable..

Ceux qui avaient osé l’enterrer après sa dernière déconvenue ont eu tort. En effet, le cheval était rentré à l’écurie avec une boîterie ce qui pouvait expliquer sa contre-performance.

Après cette course, il a été entraîné essentiellement à Floréal et ce n’est que cette semaine qu’il est retourné à Port-Louis pour effectuer son unique galop de préparation en vue du Barbé. Son travail mardi fut tout simplement éblouissant : 22,53s sur 400m, tout en étant retenu par Rama – le style avec lequel il avait dominé Royal Deed ce jour-là et le chrono étaient évocateurs. Dès lors, il ne faisait pas de doute qu’il allait être le principal adversaire de World Focus dans notre deuxième classique.

La course elle-même fut lancée par Young Warrior, qui se montra le plus rapide au départ. Suivait ensuite Altaturk en one-off à l’extérieur de Have Mercy, Royal Deed, World Focus, Fashion Editor, Rhythmically en one-off, London Gold, Clifton King et Perfect Warrior.

Young Warrior tenta de réduire l’allure à l’entame de la descente mais Altaturk était suspendu à ses basques. Au même moment, Whelan prit la décision de placer World Focus à l’extérieur de Royal Deed afin de ne pas se laisser piéger à l’intérieur.

Altaturk attaqua franchement Young Warrior au 600m et, à ce moment précis, World Focus se retrouvait dans une situation idéale dans la mesure où il était évident que les meneurs n’allaient pas pouvoir continuer sur leur lancée en ligne droite.

À l’arrière les choses se précisaient. Lloyd, nullement pressé, suivait les manoeuvres des leaders de loin, tout en gardant un oeil attentif sur son principal adversaire, World Focus. Quand ce dernier fut lancé vigoureusement par Whelan à 300 mètres du but, Lloyd ne paniqua point et il se rapprocha graduellement. Rhythmically était toujours en main dans le sillage du coursier de l’écurie Perdrau au dernier virage. London Gold refaisait également du terrain à vue d’oeil.

Gandolph à 69/1 !

Dans un premier temps, World Focus domina Young Warrior pour faire figure de vainqueur. Mais Rhythmically se montra très menaçant à l’extérieur. Le courageux coursier de l’écurie Perdrau tenta de faire de la résistance mais Lloyd jeta tout son poids dans la bataille dans les derniers mètres et Rhythmically démontra le meilleur finish pour s’imposer par plus d’une demi-longueur. Rhythmically couvrit les 1600m en 1,37,54s. Toutes nos félicitations vont à son entourage et surtout à son entraîneur Philippe Henry qui a eu le mérite de le ramener à son meilleur niveau. Il faut reconnaître que l’entraîneur champion ne disposait pas de beaucoup de temps pour préparer ce coursier, après le petit pépin dont il avait été victime lors de son avant-dernière sortie. Il a su doser l’entraînement de son poulain et cela a payé. Bravo !

Cette douzième journée s’est disputée sur une piste molle et comme cela est souvent le cas dans ces circonstances, les outsiders ont été à la fête alors que plusieurs gros favoris ont mordu la poussière.

Un des plus gros outsiders à s’être imposé hier est incontestablement Gandolph (69/1), vainqueur de la septième course. Ce cheval qui avait toujours terminé parmi les derniers lors de ses trois précédentes sorties au Champ-de-Mars a déployé un finish percutant pour dominer Paranui dans les derniers mètres. Pour expliquer cette transformation, l’entraîneur Gilbert Rousset devait déclarer aux commissaires qu’il avait décidé, après concertation avec Nishal Teeha, d’enlever les blinkers de ce cheval. Résultat : Gandolph a couru plus relax.

Auparavant, Nishal Teeha s’était distingué avec un autre outsider, le nouveau Heliotrope (17/1) dans la 3e course. À l’issue d’une course idéale sur les barres derrière les meneurs, Heliotrope démontra le meilleur coup de rein pour s’imposer devant Diamond Lullaby.

À l’instar de Nishal Teeha, Kelvin Jupp signa également un beau doublé grâce à Kings Arms (7/1) et Articflo (10/1).

Kings Arms profita une nouvelle fois de la déroute du favori Blushing Moon pour s’imposer de peu au finish dans l’épreuve d’ouverture. Il coiffa l’outsider Rivermagic dans les derniers 25 mètres pour signer sa deuxième victoire consécutive.

De son côté, Articflo signa sa 10e victoire au Champ-de-Mars à l’issue d’une parfaite course d’attente dans la 4e course. Bien monté par Jupp, il repoussa l’assaut final de Joshua Tree (19/1) , avec lequel l’entraîneur Bud Gujadhur a bien failli réaliser un véritable coup de poker sur 1365m !

Plus tôt dans la journée, Jerico (6/1), a remporté sa deuxième victoire de la saison dans la 2e course. Il profita pleinement de sa première ligne pour s’imposer de bout en bout avec Lloyd en selle.

Superviviente rétrogradé

Par ailleurs, Cordobat, coté à 19/1, remporta de brillante manière la 6e course. Ce cheval, il faut le faire ressortir, excelle sur la piste molle. Du reste, sa dernière victoire l’année dernière, il l’avait acquise alors que le pénétromètre affichait 3,1 unités. Hier, il eut un “dream-run” en troisième position à la corde au contraire des favoris Brooke’s Express et Forest Flag qui suivaient en arrière-garde. Cordobat prit le first-run à 300 mètres du but et s’imposa assez facilement en ligne droite devant Celtic Chief, auteur d’une belle fin de course.

Pour conclure le festival des outsiders, Superviviente (7/1) et Masterfax (8/1) se disputèrent la victoire dans l’épreuve de clôture.

Au grand bonheur de l’écurie Ramdour, le premier nommé passa la ligne d’arrivée en vainqueur avec plus de deux longueurs d’avance. Malheureusement pour son entourage, la joie fut de courte durée, car Superviviente (Joorawon) fut rétrogradé à la deuxième place pour avoir sévèrement gêné Masterfax (Craven) dans les derniers 100 mètres.

Sur ce qu’on a vu sur le film, il est évident que si Rye Joorawon avait pris la peine de redresser sa monture en ligne droite, cela n’aurait pas empêché Superviviente de résister à la remontée de Masterfax et signer par la même sa première victoire au Champ-de-Mars. Pour sa part, Dany Craven n’a pas manqué l’aubaine puisqu’il eut ce pick-up ride à la dernière minute après l’indisponibilité de John Claite.

RACE 1 – The Great Gusto Plate - 1400m - C6 (31-47)

Joystick jumped awkwardly, crowding Blushing Moon. Passing the winning post on the first occasion Eternal Badger rolled out slightly, Blushing Moon then steadied from the heels of Eternel Badger, rolled out bumping Joystick. Blushing Moon raced ungenerously after this with its head up. Desert Prince was slow into stride and was taken wide from the 400 metres. At the 1100 metres Blushing Moon steadied from the heels of Dick Dastardly which was crossing onto the rails in front and then raced ungenerously after this and lay out. King Arms had a tendency to lay in in the straight. Jockey Lloyd, the rider of Blushing Moon, explained that in the past the gelding had proved to be a difficult horse, however he had pleased in the lead up to this race and was expected to perform well. However, after receiving some crowding at the start, he elected to steady his mount however Blushing Moon then threw its head up and proved difficult to control. He then elected to stay off the rails and attempted to make ground from approaching the 400 metres. However in the straight despite his urgings it was very disappointing. He added that the gelding was never comfortable, possibly because of the rain affected conditions, he further added that in his opinion the gelding might be better suited over a longer journey when able to obtain a forward position without pressure. Trainer P. Henry explained that the gelding had proved difficult in the past, as such he elected to change his gear to a citation bit, which had proved effective in track work. He stated it was his intention now to follow the advice of his jockey and seek a race over a longer journey and experiment with further gear changes. The Stewards advised Mr. P. Henry that in their opinion the performance was unsatisfactory and that Blushing Moon must run to their satisfaction before being allowed to race again.

RACE 2 – The Casey’s Flight Cup - 1500m - C5 (41-57)

Instinct jumped awkwardly and shortly after the start was further inconvenienced when Rob-N-Bob rolled in. Mathieu was slow to begin. At the 1450 metres Harly D rolled in, brushing Natures Brew. Rob-N-Bob commenced to hang out from the 300 metres and turned for home very wide. Approaching the 200 meters Royal Daredevil lay in, jockey Claite then stopped riding and straightened his mount. B. Gujadhur, the trainer of Harly D explained that from the outside barrier, with top weight, it was decided that jockey Emamdee would be instructed to endeavour to come back and race as close to the rails as possible. It was also expected that Harly D would be able to improve from the 300 metres and perform well. He added, after watching the race, he was disappointed with the gelding’s performance. Jockey Emamdee explained that after jumping he took hold of his mount to come back in accordance with his instructions. The Stewards then questioned jockey Emamdee into the reason he restrained his mount at the 1400 metres when there was an opportunity to go forward and race in front of National Express on the outside of Mr. Millionaire, instead of racing behind National Express. He explained that he came back to follow his instructions. After consideration, jockey Emamdee was found guilty of a charge under Rule 161 (f) in that he did not ride Harly D to the satisfaction of the Stewards, the particulars being that shortly after the start he unnecessarily restrained his mount when there was an opportunity to go forward and race in front of National Express and on the outside of Mr. Millionaire and by doing so, obliged his mount to race behind National Express. He was subsequently fined Rs.25,000. The Club's Veterinary Surgeon reported that both Rambo Fire and Instinct were lame in the off fore leg. In view of this report, trainer S. Ramdour was advised that Rambo Fire will need a veterinary certificate of soundness before being allowed to race again and trainer H. Maigrot was told that Instinct has been suspended for one month.

RACE 3 – The Pacific Ocean Cup - 1365m - C5 (41-57)

Music Master was slow to begin. Jockey Craven (Clever Cat) was found guilty to a charge under Rule 161 (b) for causing interference in that approaching the 1200 metres he allowed his mount to shift in, unnecessarily crowding Horn Beam, which lost its right for running. Jockey Craven was fined Rs.10,000. At the 1100 metres, Tamarin Falls steadied from the heels of Heliotrope which was crossing onto the rails in front. Rounding the home turn Thunder Valley, when being taken to the outside of Clever Cat, brushed Qui Lord.

RACE 4 – The City of Port-Louis Cup - 1365m - C2 (76+)

Joshua Tree hesitated at the start, losing ground. Harry’s Game was slow to begin. Articflo and Los Negros came together at the start. The Stewards inquired into the running and riding of Major Hero, evidence was taken from trainer P. Henry and apprentice Bussunt. P. Henry explained that he instructed apprentice Bussunt to endeavour to jump well, balance the gelding and then improve from the 300 metres. Apprentice Bussunt confirmed these instructions and explained that after jumping well, his mount had a tendency to over-race, then down the back straight when Joshua Tree improved on his outside, he elected not to push his mount and wait for the cutaway in accordance with his instructions. After viewing the films, trainer P. Henry stated that in his opinion apprentice Bussunt had allowed his mount to get too far back in the field. After consideration, apprentice Bussunt pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 161 (f) for failing to ride Major Hero to the satisfaction of the Stewards, the particulars being that in the middle stages he unnecessarily restrained his mount, obliging his mount to race further back than required. Apprentice Bussunt was subsequently suspended from riding in races for the 13th race meeting and fined Rs.10,000.

RACE 5 – The Rainbow Insurance Barbe Cup - 1600m - LRV

Clifton King, Fashion Editor and Perfect Warrior were slow to begin. World Focus jumped awkwardly, rolled out and carried Rhythmically onto London Gold. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, Have Mercy refused to settle and was awkward for some distance when racing close to the heels of Young Warrior. London Gold was taken wide rounding the home turn. At the 150 metres Royal Deed steadied when unable to improve between Have Mercy and Young Warrior. At the 50 metres World Focus rolled out, brushing Rhythmically. The Club's Veterinary Surgeon reported that Clifton King was slightly lame on the off fore leg. In view of this, trainer S. Henry was told that this horse would need a veterinary certificate of soundness before being allowed to race again.

RACE 6 – The René Maigrot Cup - 1800m - C4 (51-67)

Jockey Lloyd, the rider of Brooke’s Express explained that his mount jumped well, he then elected to restrain his mount in accordance with his normal racing pattern. He added that his mount laid in in the home straight.

RACE 7 – Prix du Conseil Municipal - 1600m - C6 (31-47)

African Epoch was slow to begin. Spacemaster was very slow to begin. Shortly after the start Paranui rolled out, brushing Rue Royale. Shortly after the start Credit Line and Up Great came together. African Epoch was slow into stride. Passing the winning post on the first occasion Paranui steadied from the heels of Rue Royale, rolled out, brushing Credit Line. Shortly after entering the straight, Rue Royale laid out and raced very wide on the track. At the 50 metres Paranui rolled out, brushing Kevin. Mr. G. Rousset, the trainer of Gandolf, explained that the gelding, at its first three starts in Mauritius, had been disappointing when racing with blinkers. As such, he elected to race the gelding today without blinkers for the first time. However, the stable was not confident and the gelding was only very moderately supported. He added that it was now his intention to continue to race this gelding over similar distances or further without blinkers.

RACE 8 – The T. C. Bradshaw Plate - 1800m - C7 (21-37)

Jockey Claite, who was stood down by the Club’s Doctor, was replaced on Masterfax by jockey Craven. The Stewards considered an objection lodged by jockey Craven, the rider of Masterfax, against Superviviente being declared the winner, alleging interference 50 metres from the winning post. Evidence disclosed that over the concluding stages Superviviente shifted in under pressure, initially crowding Masterfax, then at the 50 metres Masterfax had to check to avoid the heels of Supervivente. After consideration, acting on the provisions of Rule 178, part (b), the objection was upheld and the placings altered to read: 1st: Masterfax; 2nd: Superviviente. Jockey Joorawon (Superviviente) pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 161 (c) in that he carelessly allowed his mount to shift in over the concluding stages, checking Masterfax. He was fined Rs.20,000. Tsavo was slow into stride. For some distance approaching the winning post the first time, Into Africa over-raced. At the 150 metres Sir Winston rolled in, carrying Tsavo onto the heels of Harbour Bridge. The Stewards will question trainers of Into Africa and Sir Winston in relation to their performances.

Emamdee et Bussunt sanctionnés

Deux jockeys ont été sanctionnés à l’issue de la journée d’hier pour n’avoir pas monté à la satisfaction du panel des commissaires de course qui était présidé par Ian Paterson. Il s’agit de Yashin Emamdee pour sa monte sur Harly D, favori battu dans la deuxième course, et l’apprenti Sunil Bussunt pour sa performance sur Major Hero dans la quatrième course. Le premier nommé a écopé d’une amende de Rs 25 000 pour avoir ramené sa monture peu après le départ, alors qu’il avait la possibilité d’améliorer sa position. Le jockey a expliqué que sa monture a l’habitude de tirer et qu’il voulait le détendre à l’arrière avant de le monter au finish. Les commissaires n’ont pas accepté ses explications. Les Racing Stewards ont par ailleurs reproché à l’apprenti Bussunt, son manque d’initiative dans la 4e course. Il a plaidé coupable sous le règlement 161 (f) pour n’avoir pas monté à la satisfaction des Racing Stewards. Il a ainsi écopé d’une semaine de mise à pied et d’une amende de Rs 10 000.

Le jockey de l’écurie Maigrot, Dany Craven, a, lui, écopé d’une amende de Rs 10 000 pour avoir causé une interférence dans la troisième course, plus précisément au poteau de 1200 mètres quand il gêna Horn Beam alors qu’il était en selle sur Clever Cat. Rye Joorawon a lui aussi été sanctionné pour interférence dans les derniers mètres de l’épreuve de clôture. Alors qu’il pilotait Superviviente, il laissa sa monture verser à l’intérieur privant Masterfax d’un passage. En sus d’une rétrogadation de son cheval qui avait terminé à la première place, il a été sanctionné sous le règlement 161 (c) et aura à payer une amende de Rs 20 000. Par ailleurs, Lloyd a fait part aux commissaires des difficultés rencontrées pour maîtriser Blushing Moon dans l’épreuve d’ouverture. Il a ajouté que le cheval n’était pas à l’aise sur cette piste. L’entraîneur Philippe Henry a, lui, expliqué qu’il suivra les conseils de son jockey en alignant Blushing Moon sur un parcours allongé et essayera d’autres équipements sur le cheval. Il faut également faire ressortir que les entraîneurs Gilbert Rousset et Vincent Allet seront convoqués ultérieurement pour expliquer respectivement les prestations de Into Africa et Sir Winston qui étaient engagés dans l’épreuve de clôture.

Dans un autre ordre d’idées, la promptitude et le professionnalisme avec lesquels Ian Patterson a mené les enquêtes hier ne nous a pas laissés insensible. Pour rappel, le Racing Director de Macao a été invité par le Chief Stipe Alain Rousset à présider le Stewards panel pour quatre journées.
