Director Brahma Kumaris, South America
Could you tell us about your association with the Brahma Kumaris?
I started with the Brahma Kumaris in 1975 in London. I spent a few months there and then I went to Australia to establish the Brahma Kumaris’ work. After four or five years I was requested to go to Brazil to start the work in South America. And I am still based there…
You have been conducting various sessions on self-management, how important is it for the individual in the family and the workplace?
If you are able to manage yourself better, you can make decisions with more clarity. You can see things with more clarity. You can also see more options in front of you. When you can see the options, the decisions you make are more reliable. And people tend to start relying on your decisions because you have clarity. Concerning self-management, it is basically your knowledge as well as the understanding of yourself and what you have to do that make you constant. Moreover, the individual should be able to manage his emotions.
How can knowledge of emotional intelligence help the modern individual?
Emotional intelligence is the thing you need to relate to other human beings and to control your emotions. Then you realise that people are not things or objects. You realise they have feelings as well. Hence, you have to make adjustments to live with them in a peaceful way at home. We should not only know what to say to people but also when to say it and how to say it. People have their moments and their moods. So emotional intelligence helps us to understand signals, which can help us detect the mood and the mind of the person.
According to you, what is the key factor that determines inner peace?
It is to stop depending on others as one’s source of peace. The person has to go within himself and see that there is in fact peace in the person like the mechanism of the body. The person has to bring this peace out of himself.
What are the key elements of a quality life program?
If you look at somebody who has lived for sixty years in a big city like New York, you will find that he sleeps 8 hours a day. The rest of the time, he is in constant activity. Within these constant activities, he has to look for activities where he can find this inner peace. For example, when he watches television he has to watch valuable things rather than any kind of rubbish.
What has been the response to your seminars?
In fact Mauritian people are very open and respectful. They are generally searching for answers to many questions. Indeed several people have come to every single lecture I have given. They are thirsty for knowledge about peace. That is a very good sign…
