Do you think the four plane crashes within two weeks have a common cause? Are they all due to maintenance problems?</B>
Of course not. It is pure coincidence that these four crashes occurred within two weeks. But it is a fact that people’s attention is focused on the security of aircraft because these crashes have occurred within a very short period of time. None of them were due to maintenance problems.
<B> Does this make Mauritian engineers and other stakeholders more aware of the dangers?</B>
The attention of people in the aviation sector does not vary. A technician is by no means an improviser. A technician’s work consists in a series of calculated and listed gestures. Each part of the maintenance and checks on the ground is marked on a checklist, which the technician has to follow. This checklist allows estimating of all elements linked to different departments that are all done in the right order. All these checks are done by professionals in different departments. We give a maximum guarantee of security. But there are companies around the world which do not carry out the tasks as rigorously and this leads to the type of criticisms we have heard recently…
Does this mean that all companies are not all in the same boat?</B>
In the case of Air Mauritius, we first have to be certified as “capable of doing such checks” by the local authorities, the Domestic Civil Aviation. Then, our competences are ratified by the “Direction Générale d’Aviation Civile” (DGAC) in France. The several levels of competence are regulated under certifications called the Joint Aviation Regulations (JAR). The DGAC pays regular visits under the JAR to Air Mauritius and renews our certifications. This allows us to carry out our operations in France and Europe. However, all countries are not in the same boat. France, for example, has felt the need to go beyond general certifications and has implemented a system of labels.
Have there been any “extra measures” taken since the tragedies occurred throughout the world? </B>
No. Our checklists are safe and no extra measure is necessary at this stage. If we sometimes have delays in our departures, it is due to this notion of security. No pressure could be strong enough to make us forget about security. Air Mauritius will not make any compromise on safety. What people should also realise is that the airplane is definitely the safest means of transport.
