An illicit “love story” ended up in tragedy. Anerood Kalutay has confessed to the police that he killed Raj Kumar Umrith, whose body was found in a vegetable garden in Plaine-des-Papayes last Thursday. He explained that he suspected a relationship between the victim and his own wife and wanted to put an end to it. He is provisionally accused of murder and will remain in police custody until the 20th October after the police prosecutor objected to his release on bail.

Raj Kumar Umrith was stabbed four times before dying of a “stab wound of the abdomen”, according to the principal police medical officer, Dr Sudesh Kumar Gungadin. When the police first discovered the body in a field in Plaine-des-Papayes on Thursday morning, they could not identify him. But the investigation of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) finally led them to Raj Kumar Imrith, a driver at Consolidated Fabrics (CFL).

Likewise, a short enquiry with the victim’s relatives revealed that the latter was single and was having an affair with a married woman - Anerood Kalutay’s wife. The couple was taken to the CID office in Piton and the husband finally admitted he had committed the crime after his wife had given the first clues to the police.

She did not confirm her affair with the victim but insisted that Raj Kumar Umrith had been harassing her for three years. As she told her husband about this, the latter asked him to stop annoying his wife but the victim is said to have continued calling her several times.

According to her, the victim called her again last Wednesday evening around 10 pm. She said that her husband asked her to tell the victim to come and see her. “I will talk to him,” he said. So she accepted and the two men met for what was to be a final encounter for Raj Kumar Umrith. The wife asserted that she did not know her husband had a knife with him when he went to meet Umrith.

When the police gave Anerood Kalutay’s his wife’s version, he confessed to the crime giving full details about what happened exactly on that Wednesday night. When the police took him to the scene of the crime, he also explained how it all happened - he had run after the victim and stabbed him several times before the latter collapsed. Then, he ran away to his house… Until Anjeeli Cunniapen, who lives near the field, discovered the body on Thursday morning and gave the alert…
