Grenade wounds 14 at Kashmir forest resort
Suspected Islamist militants detonated a grenade at a forest resort in Indian Kashmir yesterday, wounding 14 people, including at least eight tourists, police said.
More than 600,000 overwhelmingly Indian tourists visited Indian Kashmir last year but separatist attacks have increased in recent weeks across the region. Kashmir is split between India and Pakistan but is claimed in full by both.
No militant group has claimed responsibility for the blast which took place in Pahalgam, a popular pine forest resort 100 km (60 miles) south of Srinagar, Indian Kashmir’s summer capital. “The explosion created panic among the tourists. Many were crying,” one police officer told Reuters by telephone.
It was not known if any foreigners were among the injured, he added.
Tens of thousands of people have died in a revolt against Indian rule in the state since 1989.
