A breath of fresh air seems to be blowing over the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM). More than four months after their defeat at the general elections, party members are obviously recovering. The election of members forming the political bureau – which has not really changed – was the opportunity for the MMM to reflect on its mission and look serenely to the future. Paul Bérenger, unanimously re-elected as party leader, admits he has been leading the party alone but insists that leadership will now be collective.

In fact, the composition of the political bureau has not changed much. The only difference may be the fact that experienced members seem prepared to leave more room and more power to the younger generation. With this in mind, Steven Obeegadoo, has been appointed secretary general. He will be responsible for defining the party line, for the militants’ and party executives’ training as well as international relations. In a nutshell, he will work with Rajesh Bhagwan (also secretary general) to ensure an effective and successful renewal of the party. Abdullah Hossen, Prakash Meenowa and Danielle Perrier will assist the two secretaries-general.

The hierarchy of the party has roughly remained the same. Paul Bérenger will be assisted by four deputy leaders: Jayen Cuttaree (top of the list), Alan Ganoo, Ahmad Jeewah and Ivan Collendavelloo. The new president is Sam Lauthan who will have three deputies – Dev Ramnah, Arianne Navarre-Marie and Soodesh Roopun. Ajay Gunness remains in his post of treasurer while Veda Baloomoody becomes his deputy.

In fact, what has really changed between the election of the former political bureau and this one is Paul Bérenger’s manner and attitude. He admitted to his ‘autocratic’ way of leading the party and does not hesitate to say that he will be more open to others’ ideas as from now.

The party seems to be more aware of the difficulties ahead but their will to succeed and become “an alternative for the reconquest of power” seems even more present. “The MMM will have a crucial role in the country’s future,” claims Steven Obeegadoo. The MMM is reaffirming what has always been at the basis of its success as it positions itself as a left-wing party. “We are a left-wing/centre-left party; we are sincere and we know the limits of economic management. But we know that social justice is important and we intend to fight poverty,” asserts the re-elected leader.
