Litter and paddling dogs are blighting Britain?s newly unveiled memorial fountain to the late Princess Diana and are partly to blame for its closure two weeks after it opened, a Cabinet minister said yesterday.
?Irresponsible? people who throw garbage into the water, including diapers, are not paying the tribute the respect it deserves, said Tessa Jowell, who heads the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, which oversees the fountain in London?s Hyde Park.
The ring-shaped water sculpture was opened by Queen Elizabeth on July 6, almost seven years after Diana?s death in an August 1997 car crash in Paris. The ceremony put an end to years of bureaucratic wrangling over what form a tribute to the ?People?s Princess? should take.
But a week after, a blocked pump halted the water flow and it was closed for repairs.
Days later, three people ? including a child ? were hospitalised after slipping in the streams that flow along the fountain?s 210-metre-long trough. ?We accept there are problems that the Royal Parks have got to sort out?, Jowell told the Sunday Telegraph. ?Once they are sorted, people have got to be responsible. The critical issue is that this is a memorial. I don?t think any responsible person would want to see people allowing their dogs in it.?
Since its closure, the fountain has been roped off while designers consider ways to make the structure safer.
