Danube floods force thousands to flee
Thousands of Romanians fled low-lying areas of the Danube basin over last 24 hours after the river overwhelmed flood defences to swamp roads and farmland, an interior ministry statement said yesterday.
Europe’s second-longest river swollen by rain and the spring run-off, has swept over vast tracts of land in central and southeastern Europe this month. The flooding has forced thousands of people living on the Danube’s flood plains out of their homes, including about 15,000 in Romania. Many refugees been accommodated in military tents pitched on higher ground.
