Sunday afternoon is a special one for the kids of Camp Firinga in Pointe-aux-Sables. It is 2.30pm and all the plants, leaves and trees are baking in the sun. Deep in the community centre, noises can be heard. In fact, they are shouts of kids having fun.

While thoroughly enjoying themselves, those kids are really busy. Indeed, they are making all possible shapes with papier-mâché and baked flour in a workshop organized by Media Watch. Ten members, including volunteers and the president of the organisation, Loga Virahsawmy, are there to coordinate the workshop called Zanfan lalimier project.

While the volunteers are aged between nine and 65 years old, a hundred children aged from 3 to 22 years old of the area have come for the activities organised by Media Watch. The expression on their faces are simply indescribable. While some are concentrating hard on what they are doing, others are simply delighted and happy to be there. One of the kids cannot find words to describe his feelings: “I am making animals with pieces of plastic bottles and other rubbish and with some flour too. It is marvellous!” As a matter of fact, they do not seem bothered at all about getting dirty with the flour.

A book as the outcome…</B>

After all, Media Watch has several aims in doing such activities. One of them is to come out with a book of what the children have produced during these sessions. But the major aim is to prevent those kids from getting involved in unhealthy and dangerous activities. A member of Media Watch, Anushka Coy, explains: “Every Sunday at 2p.m, those kids have nothing to do. So, they go and start doing things they should not. For example, some fall into drugs and other similar social evils. Here we are giving them the chance to do creative things! And they are happy!” Furthermore, she stresses that, without the financial aid of the American embassy this project would not have been possible. She then adds: “It would be great if we could have even more sponsors! Therefore we invite all those who would like to help us to contact us. We would be really grateful!”

Last Sunday was just the first time-members of Media Watch will be going to the community centre of Camp Firinga every Sunday, from 2pm to 5pm for the next 11 weeks. Hence, their last visit to Pointe-aux-Sables will be on 28th January. But their work will still not be over as they will then go to several other places such as Rivière-du-Rempart in the North and other areas in the South.

However, they will continue to keep a close eye on the areas where they have introduced their activities. They want to go as far as they can with their project of empowering children through their workshops. They need to be encouraged…
