The preliminary inquiry before Magistrate Anil Kumar Ujodah in Dev Hurnam?s case started last week. The latter is provisionally charged with giving instructions to maim Senior Puisne judge Bernard Sik Yuen and murder two policemen. As Dev Hurnam is his own lawyer for his defence, he had to question Antoine Chetty.

The latter continues to assert that the lawyer gave him instructions to cut the judge?s right wrist. This was to be done in Rodrigues, according to Chetty. He adds that he went to Hurnam?s office in Port-Louis with his former boss, Vinay Deelchand, where he was offered Rs 400,000 to do the job.

When the lawyer, who has always denied these accusations, questioned Chetty, he asked him why he suddenly decided to make these revelations after so long. ?After I got caught by the police, I thought a lot about the wrong actions I had committed. I decided to tell everything so as to dispense justice.?

Before being caught by the police for possession of drugs, Antoine Chetty had been notary Vinay Deelchand?s driver and bodyguard for about ten years. He later admitted ? during one of his famous confessions ? that he was the one who had committed most of the crimes ordered by his boss. The latter has been arrested and is waiting in prison to be released on bail. The police say the accusations are too serious to comply with his demand. Chetty has been tried and sentenced to nine years in prison.
