In brief
Hong Kong. US woman loses appeal in milkshake murder? trial. An American woman sentenced to life in prison in Hong Kong for the death of her banker husband lost her bid yesterday for a new trial. Although the three-judge panel denied Nancy Kissel?s request for a retrial, the court said the 44-year-old woman can take her case to the Court of Final Appeal. Nancy Kissel, of Minnesota, was convicted in 2005 of giving her husband a milkshake laced with sedatives before bashing the banker on the head with a metal ornament.
The sensational trial became widely known as the ?milkshake murder.? She said shedid it in self defense, but prosecutors argued she was a cold-blooded person who planned the attack in the couple?s luxury apartment. Defense attorney Simon Clarke said he was ?very disappointed? with Monday?s decision from the Court of Appeal. But he added he expected ?a better hearing at the Court of Final Appeal.?
