BPML already has third cybertower on its mind
The Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector is taking off. While the first cyber tower is 80% full and the construction of a second has already started, Business Parks of Mauritius Ltd (BPML) is already thinking of adding a third one to the Mauritian landscape. This is indeed a sign of its confidence in the future of ICT. The Foreign Direct Investment directly linked to the ICT sector is already up to Rs 45 million.
BPML has already launched a feasibility study for this project. The new building would include ten floors and cost Rs 750 million. However, the prime minister, warns that “this tower will not be as important as the previous one. But it will nevertheless be an intelligent building.”
The prime minister says he is “very satisfied with the way the ICT sector is moving. Statistics can prove it!” He seems proud that the first cyber tower is filling very rapidly, “the quickest worldwide.” Twenty-two companies have committed to rent premises and twelve have already moved in. The others should be in by next January.
In view of this recent boom, the government is bound to revise the ICT Act to make sure it meets the demands of the new economy. As a result, new legislation is under study. This bill should impose specific conditions for this new sector. The role of the regulating body, the Information and Communication Technologies Authority, should particularly be reviewed.
The government has other projects linked to the ICT sector. Apart from an Electronic Transaction Act and a Children Online Protection Act, it intends to be totally involved in the new economy. A consultant should soon be appointed by the Commonwealth Secretariat to develop the e-government.
