<B>Sadistic press?</B>

I am not a devout worshipper of the press but still I was shocked by the scathing attack against the media delivered by a certain R.A.J on Tuesday last. His mean and lengthy prose was published in a daily which no doubt had an axe to grind with someone or about something. Anyway, one is at a loss to explain the readiness of some press people to indulge in self-flagellation. How can a newspaper open its columns to such a spurious fellow whose avowed aim is to discredit the Mauritian press? Admittedly, journalists do commit mistakes. As other professionals, like bankers or priests, some do fail to meet the strictest standards of ethics but should we throw out the baby with the bath water? No levelheaded citizen would be prepared to support that shameful censor of the media and his mudslinging campaign. Because our democracy cannot survive if we give way to those wicked minds. Unless, of course, we believe that MBC can unfailingly deliver high quality, accurate and impartial information.
