SOMALIA. US launches new air strike. Forces hunting al Qaeda suspects launched a fresh air strike on southern Somalia yesterday, a Somali government source said. ?As we speak now, the area is being bombarded by the American air force,? he told Reuters, giving no further details. The latest attack followed mounting international criticism of a US strike in the area on Monday which Somali officials said had killed many people.
ENERGY. EU seeks huge revolution. The European Commission is due to demand a new ?Industrial Revolution? when it unveils a wide-ranging set of proposals on energy and climate issues. The EU?s civil service wants more investment in renewable energy, arguing that the old fuels have a political as well as clear environmental cost. The need has been given greater urgency by Russia?s oil row with Belarus, which has hit EU states Germany and Poland. The report is expected to demand 20% of energy comes from renewables by 2020. Without such investment and energy efficiency measures, the report predicts that EU energy imports will rise from 50% of consumption to 65% by 2030, requiring increased reliance on potentially unpredictable sources.
INTERNET. New unofficial Saddam film posted. A new video showing former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein after his execution has appeared on the Internet. In it, Saddam Hussein?s body can be seen lying on a hospital trolley, his throat red from a gaping neck wound and head twisted sharply to one side. The unofficial footage appears to have been filmed on a mobile phone, as happened with an earlier illicit video which showed the entire hanging. Two Iraqis are being questioned over that video and the taunts heard then.
AUTISM. Cartoons to aid children. A project that has helped a small group of autistic children understand more about human emotions is being launched in the UK. The project uses cartoons narrated by the actor Stephen Fry to help teach the youngsters about facial expressions. People with autism often struggle to identify and understand feelings, and to look others in the eye.
