She seems to have been the victim of her “niece’s bad company”. Last Thursday, three men came to Kushmawtee Kholipa’s place looking for her niece, who used to live with her at Bel-Air Rivière-Sèche. As Kushmawtee explained to them that the girl was no longer living with her, the visitors allegedly became violent and two of them raped her. They managed to run away before the arrival of the police.

She was just going to bed around 10 pm when she heard knocks on her door. She first refused to open but had to give in when they started throwing stones at her door and windows. When she opened, she saw a 15-year old girl and two children aged ten as well as three men “armed with a sabre, a knife and a stick”.

Kushmawtee lives with her pregnant daughter and her four grandchildren who were all in the little house at that time. As soon as she saw the armed men, her daughter took her children and ran to a neighbour’s house. Kushmawtee tried to ask for the help of her nephew, who lives nearby. However, the latter was alone faced with the armed men and couldn’t do much to help her.

Hence, the alleged attackers dragged her outside her house and two of them abused her sexually. Since the victim was shouting, neighbours had called the police who arrived before the third one had time to do the same.

Since this attack, Kushmawtee says that she is traumatised. She can’t remain at her place at night and has taken refuge at a neighbour’s place. “As long as they are not arrested by the police, I won’t feel at peace.” The more so, as they came round her house on Saturday night and she asserts she can recognise one of her attackers but the police search has not been fruitful so far…
