31st 2005 and with the state of economic crisis that was besetting Zimbabwe, another attack was unleashed on all elements, irrespective of tribal affiliations, especially the poor, during «Operation Murambatsvina», which bulldozed houses, destroyed legitimate market stalls and wiped out many of the beautiful Zimbabwean arts and crafts sold therein.

Kofi Annan asked the UN Human Settlement Programme to investigate, and in one of the strongest ever worded reports of that august body, they stated that 2.4 million people (twice the population of Mauritius) had been displaced from their homes, dispossessed of their goods and livelihoods, and made refugees in their own country.

One often knows someone by the company he keeps. In 1991 a «gentleman» fled to Harare to become the security adviser of President Mugabe. «In absentia», he was found guilty by the Ethiopian courts of genocide. Oh, his name? Mengistu Haile Mariam.
