■ RACE 1 ? THE CHICA CUP

The Club?s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Frequent Dance was suffering from a sore neck and was unfit to race. Consequently, the horse was withdrawn at 3.15 p.m. on Friday. As a result, all bets on this horse were ordered to be refunded and betting with bookmakers was re-opened. Trainer L. A. Gallet was told that Frequent Dance will need a veterinary certificate of soundness before being allowed to race again. With the withdrawal of Frequent Dance, Praise Caesour became a runner and was ridden by jockey V. Bundhoo. Blessed Arabian was fractious in its barrier, as a consequence of this Jagger?s Peak became fractious and burst through but was quickly reigned in and took its place in the field. Desert Prince and Jagger?s Peak were slow to begin. Cut?Em Up was very slow to begin. Trainer B. Gujadhur was told that this horse must trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before being allowed to race again. At the 1300 metres Undisputed lay in away from Tamarin Falls and crowded Praise Caesour, which had to be steadied when awkward on the heels of Special K. Shortly after this, Undisputed and Praise Caesour bumped when Tamarin Falls continued to shift in. Jockey Joorawon, rider of Tamarin Falls, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under Rule 161 (c) and was subsequently fined Rs 20,000. At the 1250 metres Brassy Badger steadied off the heels of Muhta?s Dancer. In the middle stages Brassy Badger continued to over-race and was awkward on the heels of Muhta?s Dancer. At the 600 metres, Undisputed lay in crowding Praise Caesour. Blessed Arabian was taken wide rounding the home turn to continue going forward. Approaching the winning post Praise Caesour, which was tight on the inside of African Epoch, steadied on the heels of Brassy Badger which rolled out. Shortly after this, Tamarin Falls was inconvenienced when Blessed Arabian laid in under pressure. Jockey Naiko was warned to exercise more care. The Stewards questioned jockey Naiko in relation to his handling of Blessed Arabian rounding the home turn. He explained that he commenced to put pressure on his mount from the 500 metres, however his mount only commenced to pick up rounding the home turn where he then committed himself to improving around Tamarin Falls. After viewing the films, he agreed that he may have erred and it would have been in the best interest of his mount to remain behind Tamarin Falls. After consideration, the Stewards decided to proceed no further, however Naiko was warned that in future he was expected to show greater judgement.

Routine urine specimen was taken for analysis from Undisputed prior to the race and blood specimen from Muhta?s Dancer after the race.

■ RACE 2 ? THE EMTEL INTERNATIONAL CUP

High And Dry, Ay Tee Em and Space Centre were slow to begin. Bang On Time jumped awkwardly, then lay in, crowding Place On The Bay. Approaching the 1300 metres Ay Tee Em steadied off the heels of Cross Patch and rolled out onto Place On The Bay. At the 1300 metres Cross Patch had to be steadied when awkward on the heels of Bang On Time which was shifting ground. Jockey Boutanive, rider of Bang On Time, was warned to exercise more care. At the 1250 metres Cross Patch had to be steadied when awkward on the hindquarters of Major League. Jockey Orffer, rider of Major League, was warned to exercise more care. At the 1000 metres High And Dry checked to avoid the heels of Peruzzi which was shifting ground inwards. Jockey Rawa, rider of Peruzzi, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under Rule 161 (c) and was subsequently fined Rs 10,000. Space Centre raced wide in the early and middle stages. The Stewards questioned jockey Woodworth in relation to the handling of Cross Patch in the early stages. He explained he was having his first ride on this gelding and said that he was instructed to endeavour to jump well and race in a mid-field position. He added that after jumping well he did not put pressure on his mount in the early stages as at its last start when ridden by jockey Teeha, Cross Patch was inclined to over-race after being pushed forward in the early stages. His explanations were noted.

■ RACE 3? THE EMTEL INNOVATION CUP

Casey?s Bluff was slow to begin. War Games jumped awkwardly, crowding Harriman onto April Boy. Shortly after the start Looks To Kill stumbled. At the 1250 metres Looks To Kill lay in, brushing the hindquarters of April Boy, and when straightened, lay out, carrying Seeking The Gold onto Dick Dastardly. Dick Dastardly raced wide in the early stages. At the 900 metres Looks To Kill, which was racing awkwardly, rolled in crowding Harriman. At the 600 metres Harriman steadied when unable to improve between Looks To Kill and Seeking The Gold. At the 400 metres Harriman, which was awkward on the hindquarters of Dick Dastardly, rolled in, crowding Looks To Kill. Leaving the 300 metres Looks To Kill had to be steadied when awkward on the inside of Harriman. Jockey Emamdee pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under Rule 161 (c) and was subsequently suspended from riding in races for one race meeting and fined Rs 10,000. Seeking The Gold raced wide rounding the home turn. The Stewards inquired into the running and handling of Imperial Domain. Evidence was taken from trainer S. Henry and jockey Jones. Trainer Henry explained he raced the horse in South Africa where he experienced bleeding problems. Today, it was having its third start in Mauritius and because of its bleeding problems, he was unable to give the gelding a normal training regime. Therefore, today, racing over an unsuitable distance he instructed jockey Jones to endeavour to jump well, settle in a rearward position and then endeavour to improve in the home straight. He added that the gelding was not supported by the stable connections. Jockey Jones confirmed those instructions and explained that after getting back in the field his mount was then inclined to lay in from the 1000 metres and at the home turn shifted ground inconveniencing Casey?s Bluff. Imperial Domain then continued to lay in obliging him to pull the whip through to his right hand, then over the concluding stages when using the whip in the right hand his mount was able to make up ground. After consideration, jockey Jones pleaded guilty to contravening MTC Rule 161 (f) in that he failed to ride Imperial Domain to the satisfaction of the Racing Stewards, the particulars being that in the early part of the home straight he failed to ride with the required vigour and determination, which was in accordance with his instructions, and, in doing so, cost his mount the fourth position. Jockey Jones was suspended from riding in races for two race meetings.

■ RACE 4 ? THE EMTEL TV CUP

Salt Lake City was slow to begin. London Del jumped awkwardly. Midnite Mass over-raced in the middle stages and at the 800 metres steadied off the heels of Kilto. War Council, which was following, also steadied. War Council was then taken wide from the 500 metres. On the winning post Wolfe Tone rolled out onto London Del.

■ RACE 5 ? THE EMTEL CHALLENGE CUP

Jumpin Joshua jumped awkwardly and carried Halidom onto Gold Bid. Shortly after this, after brushing Gold Bid, Halidom became unbalanced, shifted in, brushing Jumpin Joshua which then had to steady from the heels of Heliotrope. Cable Guy was slow into stride. Flavius raced wide in the early stages. For some distance approaching the 100 metres, Jumpin Joshua was held up when unable to obtain a clear run between Heliotrope and Yankee Bell and was taken to the outside of Heliotrope to continue going forward. At the 25 metres Gold Bid had to be steadied when awkward between Flavius and Jumpin Joshua. Jockey Joorawon, rider of Gold Bid, explained that although racing in a forward position his mount never travelled comfortably and then in the home straight was disappointing. A subsequent veterinary examination of Gold Bid revealed no abnormality.

■ RACE 6 ? THE EMTEL 3G CUP

Clifton King was slow to begin. Mister Assembly slipped behind upon jumping. African Ambassador jumped awkwardly, shifted ground onto Elizondo. At the 1300 metres Aquavit had to be steadied when awkward on the inside of Longford which in turn was carried in by Aquavit. African Ambassador over-raced in the early stages. At the 900 metres Aquavit, when being steadied, threw its head and over-raced. Longford raced wide in the early stages. Oisin Breeze was taken wide from the 500 metres. Mister Assembly was taken wide rounding the home turn. T.Rex commenced to give ground shortly after straightening and then was eased out of the race. A subsequent veterinary examination of T.Rex revealed no abnormality. Trainer Ramapatee Gujadhur was told that this horse must trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before being allowed to race again. Longford commenced to give ground rounding the home turn and was very disappointing. A subsequent veterinary examination of Longford revealed that it was lame on the off fore leg. In view of this, trainer S. Ramdour was told that this horse will need a veterinary certificate of soundness before being allowed to race again. At the 100 metres Clifton King had to steady from the heels of Elizondo.

■ RACE 7 ? THE EMTEL MOBILE DATA CUP

Matthew?s Own and Jazz Band were slow to begin. Slivovitz jumped awkwardly. For some distance approaching the 1300 metres Bold Plum which was over-racing was steadied off the heels of Cazam. Cazam lay out rounding the home turn. Jazz Band lay out rounding the home turn and then raced very wide on the track. Over the concluding stages Joshua Day shifted ground under pressure carrying Slivovitz onto the heels of Cazam which had to be steadied. Jockey Brown, rider of Joshua Day, was warned to exercise more care. The Stewards questioned trainer S. Henry in relation to the disappointing performance of Jazz Band. He explained that the gelding had some veterinary problems after its last start, which requested treatment and, as such, the gelding has not started for two months. However, leading up to today?s race, the gelding had worked well and as such the stable expected a forward showing and was supported accordingly. He added after viewing the race he noticed that the gelding hung out and, after this, was disappointing. Since then, a veterinary examination had revealed no apparent abnormality.

■ RACE 8 ? THE WING PASSAGE PLATE

The start was delayed when the bridle of Gandolf was dislodged and which had to be reset. Tincture was fractious in the barriers. Pigeon Post was slow to begin. Golden Kahir jumped awkwardly, shifted ground, crowding Sideliner onto Droplet. Droplet then bumped Gandolf. At the 1400 metres Gandolf had to be checked from the heels of Droplet which shifted in after being bumped by Sideliner which was carried in by Golden Kahir which was awkward on the heels of Awanago which was shifting ground inwards. Jockey Mahadia, rider of Awanago, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under Rule 161 (c) and was subsequently fined Rs 20,000. At the 1300 metres Guzerat, after steadying from the heels of Jazz King, rolled in, crowding Sideliner onto the hindquarters of Droplet, Sideliner and Droplet became unbalanced. Gandolf, which was following, steadied. Jockey Sooful, rider of Guzerat, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under Rule 161 (c) and in relation to penalty, Sooful requested a suspension rather than a fine. He was subsequently suspended from riding in races for one race meeting. Blushing Moon over-raced in the early stages. At the 700 metres Tincture, which was over-racing, improved on the inside of Awanago but, as there was insufficient room, had to be steadied. Droplet, which was following, steadied off Tincture,rolled out, inconveniencing Sideliner which was carried onto Pigeon Post. Guzerat was taken wide rounding the home turn. On straightening, Gandolf was held up when unable to improve between Sideliner and Droplet. Pigeon Post was taken wide shortly after straightening. At the 200 metres Gandolf had to be taken to the inside of Awanago, which was giving ground, to continue to go forward. The Cub?s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Guzerat was suffering from lacerations to its near fore fetlock and pastern. In view of this, trainer C. Ramdin was told that this horse will need a veterinary certificate of fitness before being allowed to race again.

Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Droplet, Gandolf and Guzerat prior to the race and from Galveston after the race.

A subsequent veterinary examination and blood analysis of Men Of Rheims revealed that the gelding was suffering from an acute attack of an infection disease leading to an usually high level of Total White Cell Count, with a significant increase in Neutrophils.
