■ RACE 1 ? THE CASEY?S FLIGHT CUP
Cut ?Em Up refused to jump and was slow to begin, losing considerable ground. Trainer B. Gujadhur was told that this horse must pass a barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before being allowed to race again. Tickle My Cluster, which was unruly in its stall, jumped awkwardly and Palatino was slow to begin, both losing about one length. Passing the 1300 metres Fleeting Moment, which was racing tight on the inside of Wise Owl steadied from the hindquarters of Smuggler, which was steadied in front when awkward on the hindquarters of Real Caliz. At the same time Tickle My Cluster steadied off the heels of Smuggler. From the 600 metres Smuggler was taken wide. Rounding the home turn Cut ?Em Up steadied when awkward between Tickle My Cluster and Real Caliz. Over the concluding stages Blessed Arabian lay out, inconveniencing Credit Line. At an inquiry into the running and riding of Smuggler, jockey Daby was found guilty of a charge under Rule 161 (f) in that he failed to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards, the particulars being that passing the 1300 metres he made insufficient effort to maintain his position behind Real Caliz allowing Wise Owl to shift in and approaching the 900 metres he again made insufficient effort to maintain his position behind French Lightning allowing Fleeting Moment to come in, obliging his mount to race further back in the field than required. Jockey Daby was suspended from riding in races for two race meetings.
■ RACE 2 ? THE ALFRED GELLE CUP
Place On The Bay and Royal Dome were slow to begin. Paranui raced wide on the first turn. Jockey Whitmore (Sardonyx) was questioned in relation to the handling of this gelding in the early stages of the race. He explained that although there was an opportunity approaching the 1100 metres to improve and race closer to What Price, but to do so would have obliged him to put pressure on his mount and, as in the past, the gelding had the habit of over-racing and as his mount was travelling comfortably, he felt it was of the best interest of his mount to maintain his position, which then allowed Umhlanga to shift in. After this, he enjoyed a good run following Umhlanga. His explanations were accepted. An inquiry into an incident involving Royal Dome, Rue Royale and Place On The Bay will be held on Tuesday at 7.45 a.m.
■ RACE 3 ? LE PRIX SOCIETE CLUB FOTO LTEE
From the 300 metres Looks To Kill was awkward off the heels of April Boy and was eventually taken out for a clear run.
■ RACE 4 ? THE CAMILLE L. NAIRAC CUP
At the start Grand Duke threw its head up and was slow to begin, losing about one length. The Stewards questioned trainer S. Henry and jockey Whitmore in relation to the handling of Grand Duke in the early stages. Mr. Henry explained he instructed jockey Whitmore to endeavour to jump well and then obtain the position behind Dandy Rouge in the early stages. Jockey Whitmore confirmed these instructions and explained that Grand Duke in the past has had a habit of jumping awkwardly and today, after jumping awkwardly, it became unbalanced taking some time for Grand Duke to commence to race generously, as a result of this was unable to maintain the position behind Dandy Rouge. After consideration, jockey Whitmore was found guilty contravening MTC Rule 161(f) for failing to ride Grand Duke to the satisfaction of the Stewards, the particulars being that after jumping awkwardly, he became unbalanced on his mount which resulted in him riding on Grand Duke?s mouth for some distance which resulted in him racing further back in the field than required. Jockey Whitmore was fined Rs.25,000.
■ RACE 5 ? THE XORO CUP
Brandy-Pawnee and Go The Roman were slow to begin. Shortly after the start Go The Roman, when being steadied, threw its head. At the 1600 metres Bullet lay in, crowding Brandy-Pawnee. Jockey Boutanive, rider of Bullet was warned to exercise more care. At the 700 metres Maison de Paris dipped. Approaching the 300 metres Lump Sum had to be steadied when unable to improve between Medal Ceremony and the tiring Have Mercy.
■ RACE 6 ? THE SIR RAYMOND HEIN CUP
Matthews? Own was slow to begin. Press Line lay in shortly after the start further inconveniencing Matthew?s Own. Fire Qui over-raced in the early and middle stages and when being steadied, raced ungenerously, throwing its head and at the 1200 metres shifted ground, brushing Umzinto. Rounding the home turn Borzov commenced to lay out, and at the 200 metres hung out, then shifted ground abruptly and raced wide for the remainder of the race. Whilst shifting ground Borzov inconvenienced Umzinto. In the opinion of the Stewards the performance of Borzov was unsatisfactory and must trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before being allowed to race again. Over the concluding stages Umzinto lay in, crowding Matthew?s Own.
■ RACE 7 ? LA COUPE DE L?AMBASSADE DE FRANCE
Little Gee jumped awkwardly. Strike Force jumped awkwardly, striking the outside of its barrier. Seventh Scroll was slow to begin. Approaching the 1300 metres Long John Silver steadied when close to the heels of Crimson Gown. Approaching the 600 metres Eli?s Romance steadied when unable to improve between Kestrel and Te Atatu. Shortly after straightening Little Gee steadied when disappointed for a run between Kestrel and Te Atatu and was then taken to the inside of Kestrel to continue to go forward. Whilst being taken in, Little Gee brushed Eli?s Romance. Jockey Naiko, rider of Strike Force, explained that the gelding, after jumping awkwardly, raced in a rearward position and despite his urgings from the 1000 metres commenced to give ground and was very disappointing. The Club?s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Strike Force pulled up distressed.
■ RACE 8 ? THE WINGED PHAROAH PLATE
Sir Winston was slow to begin. Play The Field was slow into stride. Approaching the 1300 metres Voodoo Child steadied when awkward between Spirit and Eastern Exodus and shifted out after being brushed by Ice Flow. Soul Power then came away from Voodoo Child, inconveniencing Sun Blast. Leaving the 1300 metres Eastern Exodus checked to avoid the heels of Spirit, which was shifting in. Shortly after, Spirit continued to shift ground inwards, crowding Ice Flow onto Destination. Well Met the checked to avoid Eastern Exodus. Jockey Orffer pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under Rule 161 (c) and was fined Rs.40,000. Approaching and rounding the home turn, Eastern Exodus lay out and raced wide on the track. Passing the 300 metres Play The Field steadied when disappointed for a run between Voodoo Child and Well Met. Play The Field was then steadied and taken to the inside of Voodoo Child to continue to move forward. Sun Blast raced wide rounding the home turn. Eastern Exodus lay in on the home turn.
