Mare-Chicose inhabitants could be relieved soon. Sotravic started its job of waste burying last week in cooperation with German firm Bilfinger Berger. They have obtained the contract amounting to Rs 1 billion for burying 1,200 tons of waste everyday. But their job will not stop there and the company is expected to make the lives of Mare-Chicose inhabitants more pleasant by limiting the smell of waste in areas where it has been buried by Stam since 1997. There may however soon be a major problem, as there may be a lack of space for waste burying in the coming years.

There is only one site ? except for the one at Mare-Chicose ? that could be used for waste burying in the whole country. The problem is that it is located near Mare d?Australia where people have protested against such an activity. The government has already had to face many problems at Mare-Chicose where inhabitants complained about the strong smell of waste near their homes.

Hence, the sole solution seems to be the burning of waste for electricity production or its transformation into compost used for agriculture. The incineration will be done by Gamma Civic Ltd who will burn 300,000 tons of waste at La Chaumière every year as from 2009. As for the compost, Solid Waste Recycling Ltd will be using 40,000 tons of waste as from next year.
