The battered woman
She was battered as a beast,
By her husband pitiless and vile.
Many years had she spent,
In lonely haunted pain,
Yet, her grief – bound heart burst not.
Poison she drank not.
With rope, she hung herself not,
And from heights she jumped not.
One day, the web of silence was torn.
The decision, plain as
Lettering in the chapel, was taken.
Terrible it is, she thought in her heart
To possess a man she desired not.
She shook the dust from her feet.
Holding her little son’s hand
Firm in her hand, she left.
The world, she realised in her mind
Is not an impregnable fortress.
The arrows of her thoughts,
Cleared the mist,
While the moon was dashing
Through the dark clouds.
She would resurrect,
She would not fear the judges.
She would go to those high rocks,
Where mercy and love dwell.
She was the seeker,
She would be the discoverer.
