Racing Stewards’ Report
■ <B>RACE 1 – THE VICTOR DUVIVIER CUP</B>
At the start Benghazi and Real Schlep were slow out, both losing about one length. Real Schlep raced wide from the start (1800m) to the 1200 metres. Shortly after the start National Trust stumbled. Passing the 1300 metres National Trust had to be steadied and taken out when Who’s Pretending shifted in. Jockey Mahadia was shown the video of the incident and told to exercise care when shifting ground. At an inquiry into an incident, jockey Boutanive (Superviviente) pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 161 (c) in that near the 400 metres he carelessly allowed his mount to shift in, resulting in Going Down having to be checked. Given that jockey Boutanive has been found guilty on numerous occasions under that charge this season, the Racing Stewards decided that he be suspended from riding in races for one race meeting and be fined Rs 10,000. Passing the 100 metres apprentice Bussunt (Going Down) accidentally dropped his whip. Foxies Chord raced wide throughout.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Foxies Chord prior to the race and from National Trust prior to and after the race.
■ <B>RACE 2 – THE FREDERICK STAUB CUP</B>
As the gates opened Destination stood flat-footed and Gold Guild half-reared, losing about one and two lengths respectively and Seventh Scroll jumped outwards. Passing the 1300 metres Playing Possum was inconvenienced and had to be steadied when Dane’s Castle shifted in. Jockey Whitmore was shown the video of the incident and warned to exercise care before shifting ground. From the 1100 to the 1000 metres Destination raced fiercely, throwing its head up over some distance and had to be eased off the heels of Peruzzi. Near the 600 metres Seventh Scroll, which was racing fiercely, shifted in, resulting in Peruzzi being steadied over some distance. From the 500 metres Collect The Cash hung out, taking Peruzzi wide, resulting in both horses making the turn into the final straight wide. Approaching the 200 metres Tuff Stuff shied away from Gold Guild, shifted in, brushing the running rail and had to be checked off the heels of For Keeps. Jockey Brown (Seventh Scroll) reported that his horse had a tendency to swerve and race greenly during the race. Over the concluding stages Destination had to be taken out off the heels of Dane’s Castle in order to obtain a clear run. The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Tuff Stuff was distressed after the race and had a laceration of the tongue and that Dane’s Castle was severely lame on the off fore leg. Trainers V. Allet and S. Henry were told that their respective horses will need a veterinary certificate of fitness and soundness before being allowed to race again.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Collect The Cash and Seventh Scroll prior to the race and from For Keeps prior to and after the race.
■ <B>RACE 3 – THE L’EXPRESS TURF CUP</B>
At the start African Ambassador jumped outwards and Tincture jumped inwards, both horses brushing. From the 1200 metres African Ambassador started racing very fiercely, shifted out abruptly off the heels of Leatherman and Borzov and raced wide till the 400 metres. Borzov raced wide on the first turn. Near the 300 metres Kestrel had to be steadied off the heels of Leatherman. The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Remote Horizon bled from both nostrils. After considering Remote Horizon’s bleeding history, trainer J. Espitalier-Noël was told that this horse has been suspended indefinitely.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from African Ambassador prior to the race and from Intsu after the race.
■ <B>RACE 4 – THE MAJOR PAUL HEIN CUP</B>
At an inquiry into an incident, jockey Bundhoo (Road To Jerusalem) pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 161 (c) in that passing the 1300 metres he carelessly allowed his mount to shift in, resulting in Dandy Rouge having to be eased and taken in, bumping Joshua Day on its inside. Jockey Bundhoo was fined Rs 10,000. Grand Duke raced fiercely from the 1100 to the 500 metres. Passing the 50 metres jockey Herholdt accidentally lost his near side stirrup, which he quickly regained.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Road To Jerusalem prior to the race and from Dandy Rouge after the race.
■ <B>RACE 5 – THE GAETAN HALBWACHS CUP</B>
At the start Glenever jumped outwards and brushed Splenlid Man on its outside. Near the 1500 metres, when the pace slowed, Splendid Man started racing fiercely up to the 700 metres when it was eventually taken to the lead. The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Gold Bid bled from both nostrils. In view of this report and, acting under Rule 166 (2) (c), trainer S. Ramdin was told that Gold Bid has been suspended for one month and will need a veterinary clearance before being allowed to race again.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Cable Guy and Glenever prior to the race and from Gold Bid after the race.
■ <B>RACE 6 – THE MAURITIAN PROPERTY PARTNERSHIPS CUP</B>
At the start Tambour Battant was slow out, losing about one length. Jockey Herholdt reported that Judge Boesman hung in most of the race. A veterinary examination of the horse revealed no abnormality.
Routine urine specimen was taken for analysis from Ashton Manor after the race.
■ <B>RACE 7 – THE J. PAUL HEIN CMG CUP</B>
Prior to the start, Imperious Caesour reared in its stall and got jammed. It was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, found to be unfit to race and upon his recommendation, was withdrawn from the race. In view of this, all bets on this horse were ordered to be refunded and the winning bets with bookmakers were paid less 5 cents per rupee, the average price of Imperious Caesour being 11-1 at the time of withdrawal. At the start Little Gee jumped outwards onto Got The Pace, and Crimson Gown jumped inwards onto Stormy Front, resulting in Got The Pace being cramped for room and having to be eased. From the 1300 metres, Got The Pace started racing fiercely and approaching the 900 metres, was taken out and raced wide from thereon. Nyathi raced wide on the first turn.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Stormy Front prior to the race and from Paranui after the race.
■ <B>RACE 8 – THE LALL SEESURRUN CUP</B>
The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Super Edge was suffering from a bruise on the off fore knee and was unfit to race. Consequently, the horse was withdrawn at 8 a.m. on Friday. As a result, all bets on this horse were ordered to be refunded and betting with bookmakers was re-opened. With the withdrawal of Super Edge, Arabian Prophesy became a runner and was ridden by jockey S. Rama. Jockey Bundhoo, who was indisposed, was stood down by the Club’s Doctor and replaced on Gandolf by jockey V. Naiko. At the start Bite the Bullet and Golden Rambo were slow out, both losing about one length. Passing the 1000 metres Bite The Bullet had to be eased off the heels of Grosvenor Square. Golden Rambo had difficulty obtaining a clear run for most of the final straight. Shortly after entering the final straight, St Nicholas had to be eased off the heels of Arabian Prophesy. Near the 150 metres, Wise Owl had to be taken out in order to obtain a clear run.
Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Golden Rambo, St Nicholas and Voodoo Child prior to the race and from Gandolf prior to and after the race.
