<B>17-month old road victim</B>

Navish Chooah was found lying unconscious on the road near his house in Mare d’Albert on Friday morning. A suspect was questioned on Friday night and then authorised to go home. The police medical officer and the investigators believe the young child was hit by a two-wheel vehicle according to the wounds on his body. The last time he was seen, he was sitting with another two-year old on the terrace of his house. Then, a van driver came and said there was a wounded child on the road. When Navish’s parents took him to hospital, it was already too late to save his life.

Private cardiac centre seeks partnership </B>

The Centre de Cardiologie des Mascareignes is seeking partnership with the public sector to make heart surgery more accessible. It is said that the private sector would like the Cardiac centre to subcontract some operations to the private centre. Their argument that this will be done at more affordable prices does not seem to convince the public sector for the moment but the chairman of the Trust Fund for the Specialised Medical Care managing the Cardiac Centre, Shiv Potaya, said such an initiative was laudable as long as the “public is the winner in the partnership with quality-service”.

Possible shortage of gas soon</B>

Gas may the no longer be found in petrol stations in the near future. The Petrol Dealers Association is complaining about the low profit margin they obtain on each gas cylinder. They assert they have tried to obtain an appointment with the minister of Trade, Rajesh Jeetah, but in vain. As they do not wish to continue selling gas without any profit, they are threatening to stop selling it at all. If they reach such a point of no-return, 60,000 consumers could be affected.

CWA modernises</B>

The Central Water Authority wants to put an end to the mishandling of water-meters. As from January 2007, the institution will launch a project that will enable it to read and control water meters from their vehicles as they go around the region. This will first target the biggest water consumers such as factories or hotels for a more sophisticated control of their water meters. The new system should also help put an end to fraud by some users.
