«COMMENT LEUR PARLER D?AMOUR, DE SEXE ET DES PRESERVATIFS? »

«OUR RELATIONSHIP HAS HIT A DIFFICULT PATCH»
<B>I am writing on behalf of my husband because I know that he is not prepared to write. My husband is 42 years old and his name is M. He works as a high executive in a big company. We have a very happy marriage with two lovely kids. Recently our relationship has hit a difficult patch. It is of a sexual nature. He has an erection problem and it has been like that for a while. So far he has been unwilling to do anything about it. I have been very patient and supportive towards him but now I feel that something must be done before it causes a rift in our marriage. As I said, he has a job with lots of responsibilities and he works very hard, too hard. He loves challenges and enjoys his work. He looks a bit overweight but I suppose that this is due to all these business lunches. He needs your help or should I say, we need your help.

I am pleased to note two important points from your letter. Firstly that you have taken the trouble to write and secondly that you said that it is a problem that concerns both of you and not only your husband?s problem. For me, it shows that you are very caring, very considerate and very supportive and that does so much for the well being of the couple. In general, men have difficulty to accept that they have a problem. They are reluctant to do something especially when it is of a sexual nature and its not easy for them to seek the help of a third party.
When you say that your husband has an erection problem, I would assume that you mean that he cannot get an erection which is also known as impotence or an erectile dysfunction. It is fast becoming a condition faced by an increasingly number of men in the 21st century. It can be caused by a number of problems, stress being one of them. It is a fact that most men have probably experienced temporary impotence at one stage or another but it is generally due to a psychological reason rather than a physical one. Among the possible physical factors that can cause impotence are the following :
-
Stress
-
Fatigue
-
Drinking too much alcohol
-
Smoking too much
-
Some types of chronic illnesses
The first thing that you need to do as a couple is to have a frank discussion about the problem. The fact is that when the problem is acknowledged and aired, it helps in the understanding of the situation by both partners. Of course that does not mean that a solution will immediately be found but at least a discussion means that both partners are fully aware of the problem and hopefully make them more conscious of what they do to resolve the problem.
It is a fact that when a man is in his twenties, it takes him only a few seconds to get an erection, when he is in his forties, it may take a minute or two and when he is in his sixties, it may take longer. I have made this point so that nobody jumps to the wrong conclusions and immediately feel they have an erection problem when it is probably not the case.
The first thing that your husband should do is to consult his doctor so as to exclude any physiological reasons. If the problem is of a physical nature, the doctor will address accordingly or refer your husband to a specialist. Smoking and heavy drinking are not advisable because they could be factors that could worsen the problem. The most common psychological problem is anxiety. When a man feels pressurized to achieve an erection in a sexually demanding situation, he will become anxious and nervous and that can cause him to be unable to get or sustain an erection which in turn will increase his anxiety. This of course will become a sort of vicious circle, hence the importance of being relaxed.
Doing relaxation exercises such as yoga will help. Of course stress can be a factor as mentioned already. The demands of your husband?s job may also be having an adverse effect on his health, and hence that is why this visit to the doctor is so important. If the problem remains despite all I have suggested, you should then consult a professional. Usually the treatment will consist of a process of re-education coupled with other programmes. One of the best known is called «The Sensate Focus Programme».
