S. Africa struggles to shake off white dominance
A dozen years after the end of apartheid, black business leaders in South Africa are growing increasingly frustrated at the continued concentration of corporate power in the hands of whites.
While the government may have drawn up legislation to tackle the imbalances, business experts say that efforts are foundering for want of proper implementation and leadership from the government.
A recent study found only 1.2 percent of the top 200 companies listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) was black-owned. Economists say many companies had held back on black empowerment because until 2003 there were few clear guidelines.
