Paul Bérenger switched from his usual role of politician to that of a historian wishing to share his knowledge of Mauritian history with his fellow-citizens. ?Mauritians are ignorant about their history and this is very serious,? he said at the very beginning of his first lecture on Mauritian history last Saturday at the Port-Louis theatre. He will be presenting a series of eight monthly lectures to re-establish historical facts as he sees them. He regrets that the official version of history is full of falsehoods, propaganda and myths aimed at increasing divisions among the population. In Paul Bérenger?s opinion, if the population knew its history better, it would realise the importance of unity. He promises to observe a ?non-partisan? attitude in his attempt to educate the public about the country?s history from 1722 to 1982.
