After days of indignation, the public has become far quieter now. Since the police expressed doubts over Marie-Linley Savriacooty?s version of her alleged kidnapping in Rose-Hill and sexual assault before being abandoned in a sugarcane field, several associations may actually wait before starting up their fight against violence again. Meanwhile, the enquiry is going on and the police are trying to shed light on the story of the alleged victim concerning her so-called attack.

Following the police chief medical officer, Satish Boolell?s recommendations in his preliminary report to the Central Criminal Investigation Department (CCID), Marie-Linley Savriacooty said she would not mind being subjected to a psychiatric examination. The tests were planned to be done this week by a panel of psychiatrists from Brown Sequard Hospital. However, she is back in hospital after trying to commit suicide. The tests will probably be postponed until she feels better.

Last Tuesday, the alleged victim took part in a reconstruction of the so-called kidnapping crime in Rose-Hill. She explained where she was when a man came behind her and put his hand over her mouth. Her version differs slightly from that of her husband, Stephano Savriacooty. The latter left his home a few days after the incident at the time when the police were starting to have suspicions about the alleged victim?s version. He was the first to propose that Marie-Linley have a psychiatric examiniation.

Marie-Linley Savriacooty has stuck to her stand so far; she has maintained that she was kidnapped in the centre of Rose-Hill around three o?clock and taken to a sugar cane field in FUEL where she was beaten and sexually assaulted by three men. But she could not recognise the place she was taken to during the reconstruction.

The reason, according to her, was that she had been given thirty tablets to swallow. However, the blood test revealed no such chemical substance in her body and this is how the police started to doubt her version. Moreover, a witness has come forward saying he saw her walking on the main road in Camp de Masque around the same time.

Dev Manna, a suspect so far, was finally released last week. The Mannas and Savriacootys have had neighbourhood problems in the past and Marie-Linley Savriacooty said she heard one of her attackers called another one ?Dev? in the sugar cane field.

Investigators are continuing to closely examine her statement and her past. She indeed claimed to have been kidnapped and raped in almost the same way a few years ago by her former husband and two of his cousins but the DPP dismissed the case as she did not appear in court. The police seem to be puzzled by this similarity.
