<B>Icac wins a set against Lesage in MCB-NPF case</B>
Former chief manager of the MCB, Robert Lesage, will not benefit from total immunity. Port-Louis district magistrate Raj Seebaluck ruled out that there was no reason why the charge of money laundering against him in the MCB-NPF financial scandal should be struck out. Lesage had claimed that the Independent Commission against Corruption (Icac) had committed itself not to sue him after he made his statement under article (4) (5) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The magistrate considers that there was no overall commitment by the Icac not to sue the defendant but just not to use testimonies and documents he had given freely against him.
Former police chief sentenced to prison</B>
Former assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Sunneechurra, found guilty of bribery, has been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by district magistrate Véronique Kwok Yin Siong Yen. He has appealed against the judgment and has been granted bail. The high-ranking officer is accused of having stayed at the Oberoi Hotel for free while he was investigating a case of out-of-date products served to customers. In her verdict, the magistrate insists that “receiving a gratification, namely a free stay in a hotel” was not part of his duties as the boss of the crime department. The defendant said he stayed at the hotel with his family and did not know before the end of his stay that the hotel would insist for him not to pay.
Chikungunya… plus other viruses</B>
Health authorities are faced with a new problem. After the chikungunya – which is far from having disappeared – a new virus has reached our coasts. But… they can’t say what it is exactly. The virus seems to have the same symptoms as the chikungunya – high temperature, stiffness and joint pains except that the virus goes away more rapidly. More than 20,000 people have been affected by this new virus. Samples have been sent to Reunion for more tests to try and identify it.
Morbid visions cause tragic death</B>
His family was worried not to have any news from fisherman Yousoufkhan Hossenbaccus. But the return of Daifah I last Tuesday brought back news. Siddick Auzeer, Yousoufkhan’s cousin, explained that he saw him throw himself into the sea as he was the victim of hallucinations. He related how his cousin was not feeling well a few days before the tragedy; he had “started to see demons” and asked his friends on board to tie him to prevent him from doing silly things. But, on Saturday, he managed to untie himself and jumped into the sea.
