Possible rise in local sugar price

The sugar syndicate, the factory workers and the sugarcane planters? association are not satisfied with the price of sugar on the local market. They are all asking for an increase, as they believe the actual price is not fair. According to the last analysis of the International Sugar Organisation, the price of sugar has greatly risen. On 3rd February, it reached the record price of Rs 2,89 per kilogram. The director of the Mauritius Sugar Producers Association, Jean Li Yuen Fong, explained: ?The price of this commodity is controlled. We will try to draw the attention of the government regarding the paradox in this sector. With a lowering in price, the producer will have less revenue.?

Fugitive found dead in sugarcane field

Ajay Seetohul?s body, a fugitive from the central prison, was discovered in a sugarcane plantation in Petite-Rivière. He had hanged himself from a tree with a red electric wire. The post mortem by Doctor Satish Boolell revealed the victim had suffocated following hanging. This 31-year old fugitive was sought for by the police after his evasion on 27th March. He was serving a 10-year sentence for heroine trafficking. According to various sources, Ajay decided to end up his life because he felt abandoned by his relatives.

Li Xue Qin loses her case against Floreal Knitwear

Chinese worker Li Xue Qin has lost her appeal against her employer Floreal Knitwear. She was claiming a compensation of Rs 76 678 after she felt she was dismissed on 15th January 2004 for no justified reason. On 24th December 2003, she is said to have left her post to discuss with the management of the factory on an issue, which was not of her concern. Afterwards, she refused to resume her duties, confined three managers and incited 250 other employees to strike. Magistrate Hajee Abdoula had ruled that her dismissal was due to improper conduct.

Released but still a suspect?

Late Anshi Ittoo?s brother, Bipin, was released on bail after a week in prison. He is provisionally accused of the murder of his sister and her boyfriend, Tagoresingh Sandooram. The suspect had to pay bail for Rs 200,000 and a personal commitment of Rs 500,000. The police did not object to his release but he has to report to Quatre-Bornes police station twice a week. Even though he continues to claim that he is innocent, the Major Crime Investigation Team are not convinced about his alibi and believe that he has something to do with their death. The Ittoo family, who have always supported Bipin, have been relieved to see him back home.
